NEED TO KNOW

  • Jordan Henderson has undergone surgery after breaking his arm celebrating England’s World Cup win against Mexico

  • The midfielder, 36, who didn’t actually play in the match, fell over an advertising board after the game on Saturday, July 4

  • Henderson is recovering at England’s hotel and may still play in the tournament with a cast

Days after sustaining a broken arm in a freak accident while celebrating England’s World Cup win against Mexico, Jordan Henderson has undergone surgery.

Henderson, 36, was celebrating his team’s 3-2 win at Mexico City’s historic Azteca Stadium on Saturday, July 4, when he fell over an advertising board and landed awkwardly.

The Brentford midfielder was given oxygen and stretchered off the field, and England head coach Thomas Tuchel later said his player had suffered “a quite serious” injury to his wrist and was in the hospital.

On Wednesday, July 8, four days after the injury, Henderson announced on Instagram that he had undergone surgery at the Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute, near England’s base in Kansas City, Mo.

Alongside an image of himself in bed giving a thumbs up, he wrote, “Surgery done! Now Let’s get ready for the big one Saturday 💪” and went on to thank the staff who cared for him and the surgeons who carried out the procedure.

Many of his England teammates showed their support, including Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice, Anthony Gordon and Marcus Rashford replying with heart emojis.

According to a news release shared by England later that day, Henderson has been recovering at the team’s hotel.

After England beat Mexico 3-2 on Saturday, the team is set to play Norway in Miami in the quarterfinals on Saturday, July 11.

The winner of that tie will play either Argentina or Switzerland in the semifinals, before either France, Morocco, Spain or Belgium in the final.

Henderson, who has played 91 times for his country, has played a supporting role at this World Cup, though he became the first England men’s player to feature at four World Cups when he came off the substitutes’ bench against Panama in the group stage.

After his injury, it was thought that the former Liverpool player would have no further part in the action for the rest of the tournament. However, the BBC reported that the possibility of his playing again — perhaps in a cast — has been explored.

His teammate Morgan Rogers described him as the “heartbeat” of England, adding, via the broadcaster, “I think hopefully he can still be involved with us for the rest of the tournament.”

“He’s not going to rule himself out and neither are we. I think the belief he has got in his own body, his ability and his confidence and the way he is and what he kind of represents as a person is massive to our group.”
