NEED TO KNOW

  • Princess Eugenie waited two weeks to announce that her newborn daughter’s name is Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank
  • While some royal baby names are revealed in the days after the birth, one took nearly a month to be publicly shared
  • Find out which royal waited 29 days before sharing a future monarch’s name

Princess Eugenie waited to announce her daughter’s name publicly, and she’s not the only royal to keep a baby’s name under wraps.

Two weeks after Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank welcomed their third child on Aug. 3, she revealed that the baby girl’s name is Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank. However, there is no standard protocol when it comes to announcing the name of a new addition to the royal family.

The royal baby name announcement that came the quickest after the birth in modern history was Prince Harry’s, according to Hello! magazine. Princess Diana and the future King Charles publicly shared the name of their second child just one day after he was born in September 1984.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle took just two days to reveal each of their children’s names: Archie in 2019 and Lilibet in 2021.

Prince William and Kate Middleton were also quick to share the names of each of their three children. The names of Prince George (born in 2013) and Princess Charlotte (born in 2015) were revealed just two days after their births. The wait for the name of their little brother, Prince Louis, took slightly longer in 2018, with the future Prince and Princess of Wales waiting four days to announce the moniker.

The longest wait for a royal baby name in recent history was 29 days, according to the outlet. Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip didn’t announce the name of their eldest son, the now-King Charles, for nearly a month after his birth, waiting until his christening to confirm the name of the future monarch.

Princess Eugenie, 36, revealed her daughter’s name and its meaning with an Aug. 17 post on her personal Instagram page, featuring three new images of the baby girl, including a snap of the newborn with her big brothers, August Philip Hawke, 5, and Ernest George Ronnie, 3.

“2 weeks ago today we welcomed our girl to the world. And since then we’ve had the most special, cosy and love-filled time,” Eugenie wrote. “We are so happy to share Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank. Named after three people we love and admire past and present, including her Great-Grandmother who we hold close in our hearts.”

“Her name is part of English and Portuguese history, two places we love and call home,” Eugenie added, nodding to the baby girl’s birthplace in Lisbon.

Eugenie’s grandmother Queen Elizabeth, who died in 2022, has served as name inspiration for many of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Princess Eugenie’s sister, Princess Beatrice, has Elizabeth as a middle name, as do their cousins Zara Tindall and Lady Louise.

Among Queen Elizabeth’s great-grandchildren, Elizabeth is a middle name of Princess Charlotte, Lena Tindall, Sienna Mapelli Mozzi and Athena Mapelli Mozzi. Meanwhile, Prince Harry and Meghan named their 5-year-old daughter Lilibet, inspired by Queen Elizabeth’s childhood nickname.

The name Adelaide has royal roots as well, nodding to Queen Adelaide, the wife of King William IV.

Royal reporter Rebecca English said on X that Eugenie wore accessories at her 2018 wedding to Jack that were commissioned by King William IV for Queen Adelaide: two diamond ear brooches that the royal bride donned in her hair at her evening reception.

English added that the name was also inspired by Maria Adelaide, a Portuguese woman who is considered an honorary saint despite never being officially canonized.
