NEED TO KNOW

  • Destin Fire Rescue saved a kitten from a storm drain on Tuesday, May 19
  • Captain Britt Clark adopted the kitten for his son, naming the cat “Bee”
  • Rescuers made multiple attempts before the kitten was finally rescued

A kitten literally living in the gutter has landed in a forever home after a storm drain rescue in Destin, Florida.

On Tuesday, May 19, Destin Fire Rescue responded to multiple reports of a kitten stuck in a storm drain near 1080 Hwy 98 at around 11:00 a.m. local time, according to a Facebook post from the agency.

"The crew accessed the drain and firefighter Fuller entered to rescue the kitten," the post read. "Cold, hungry, and scared, the kitten was brought out safely!"

The rescue added that on-site paramedics assessed the cat. Destin Fire Rescue's care for the cat didn't end there, as the feline was "adopted by one of our Captains," according to the department.

In an email to PEOPLE, a spokesperson for Destin Fire Rescue said rescuers made multiple attempts to save the kitten before members of "B shift" successfully retrieved him.

The spokesperson added that Captain Britt Clark adopted the kitten for his son, with the little animal being named "Bee" for the B shift that saved the feline.

The Destin Fire Rescue shared several photos of the kitten's rescue alongside its post about the incident. The pictures include shots of the drain where Bee got stuck, and photos of the kitten cuddling up to firefighters after his rescue. The drain containing the kitten appears to be over 6 feet deep, dwarfing the little animal.

"Great job to B shift for going the extra mile to certainly save a helpless animal!" the Destin Fire Rescue wrote.
