NEED TO KNOW

  • Over 12,000 pounds of Canadian-imported bacon were recalled due to issues involving import inspections, the Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) said
  • Affected products include Royale Natural and Top Valu brands with specific sell-by dates and establishment number “EST. 1”
  • Consumers are urged to discard or return recalled items and contact the USDA hotline with food safety concerns

More than 12,000 pounds of uncooked smoked bacon have been recalled following issues involving United States import inspections, the Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspect Service said.

The agency issued its highest alert, a Class I recall, for approximately 12,036 pounds of Maple Leaf Foods, Inc. smoked bacon that was imported from Canada.

The Class I recall means there is “reasonable probability” that eating the bacon “will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death.”

PEOPLE reached out to Maple Leaf Foods, Inc. for comment, but did not immediately receive a response.

FSIS said the recalled bacon did not undergo “import reinspection into the United States,” and that the issue was detected during “routine FSIS inspection activities.”

The agency named 12-oz. vacuum packages of “Royale Natural Applewood Smoked ALL NATURAL Uncured Bacon Product of Canada” with sell by dates of “SEP 01 2026” and “SEP 07 2026” printed on the side of the package, and 12-oz. vacuum packages of “TOP VALU Uncured Hardwood Smoked Bacon PRODUCT OF CANADA” with various sell-by dates of “SEP 01 2026”, “SEP 02 2026”, “SEP 04 2026”, “SEP 05 2026”, and “SEP 07 2026” printed on the side of the package.

The FSIS release noted that the recalled bacon products were shipped to Grocery Outlet distributors and retailers in Idaho, Oregon, and Washington.

As of July 24, no confirmed illnesses had been reported. However, anyone who consumed the bacon and begins to feel sick is urged to seek care from a medical professional.

If you have purchased any of the recalled items, FSIS recommends discarding the items, or returning them to the retailer where they were purchased.

Consumers with food safety questions can call the toll-free USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 888-MPHotline (888-674-6854) or send a question via email to MPHotline@usda.gov.
