It’s time to kick my uncomfortable shorts and dingy sweaters to the curb
NEED TO KNOW
- A shopping writer is cleaning out her closet to make room for summer essentials at Quince.
- Her cart is filled with fresh, lightweight tops and pretty sundresses to replace the faded, worn-out pieces still hanging in her closet.
- She’s also eyeing a top-rated suitcase for summer vacation and work trips.
I love my home. Even though it’s older and not very large, I genuinely enjoy redecorating and giving it little updates whenever I can. The one thing I can’t change, though, is the size of my closets. They’re small and dark, and they don’t hold much, so I regularly rotate and revamp my wardrobe to keep things manageable.
Over time, I’ve learned to keep my closet streamlined and organized. Not only does it make getting dressed each morning so much easier, but it also makes me feel more confident and put together. That’s why I avoid fast fashion and instead invest in timeless essentials that work beautifully in both my capsule wardrobe and my tiny closet. And that’s exactly where Quince comes in.
Here are a few things I’m letting go of right now — and what I’m replacing them with.

I’m Ditching: Uncomfortable Shorts
Replacing with:
European Linen Shorts

$32 at Quince.com
Shorts are supposed to be comfortable, but let’s be honest — the ultra-high-rise styles that have been everywhere for the last few years can sometimes be more annoying than flattering (case in point: wedgies). This summer, I’m choosing comfort without sacrificing style with a pair of soft linen shorts. Lightweight and breathable, linen is perfect for hot days at the park or beach, but this pair is polished enough for weekend brunch or a backyard cookout. And because linen is such a timeless fabric, they feel classic rather than trendy — the kind of staple I’ll reach for year after year.
I’m Ditching: My Embarrassing Suitcase
Replacing with:
Carry-On Suitcase

$130 at Quince.com
Have you ever gone on a work trip with colleagues, arrived at the airport, and realized your carry-on bag looks embarrassingly worn out and filthy? Unfortunately, I have — and it was enough motivation for me to finally upgrade my luggage. Before my next trip, whether it’s for work or vacation, I’m investing in a new suitcase. This hard-shell carry-on checks all the boxes: smooth spinner wheels, a built-in TSA-approved lock, and some really great color options. It even earned top marks from Wirecutter, which made the decision even easier.
I’m Ditching: Dated Summer Dresses
Replacing with:
Flowknit Breeze Fit & Flare Dress

$50 at Quince.com
A classic sundress is a staple in any capsule wardrobe. But if I’m being honest, the dresses currently hanging in my closet are mostly trendy styles from years ago that no longer feel like me. I’m ready to replace those outdated pieces with this timeless empire-waist midi dress — complete with pockets, which makes it even better. It’s effortlessly cute on its own and easy to style with a denim jacket, a lightweight cardigan, or even a button-down shirt tied at the waist for a more casual look.
I’m Ditching: My Dingy Office Sweater
Replacing with:
Organic Cotton Cropped Cardigan

$50 at Quince.com
My office is always freezing — so I always keep a sweater at my desk, and lately I’ve been eyeing this cute cardigan. The classic white color will go with just about anything in my closet, and the soft cotton fabric looks incredibly cozy for long, stressful workdays. Reviewers say it “looks good with skirts or jeans” and love its versatility, making it the ideal everyday layer.
