NEED TO KNOW

  • A new Resident Evil reboot directed by Weapons‘ Zach Cregger will premiere in theaters on Sept. 18
  • Austin Abrams stars as a medical courier caught in a chaotic survival race alongside mutant creatures in Raccoon City
  • The film features an original story set during the Resident Evil 2 events

Another Resident Evil adaptation is officially on the way.

While Netflix pulled the plug on its TV adaptation in 2022, the future of the long-running, video game-inspired franchise was never really in doubt.

The series has already spawned seven films — six of which were iconically led by Milla Jovovich — and remains the most successful property in Constantin Film's history.

“Resident Evil is by far the most successful franchise that Constantin Film has ever had,” chairman Martin Moszkowicz told The Hollywood Reporter in October 2022. “So just because one series didn't get renewed doesn't mean we'll throw in the towel.”

True to that promise, the studio confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter in 2025 that Zach Cregger had been tapped to write and direct a new reboot, signaling yet another chapter for the enduring apocalyptic saga.

Austin Abrams is set to star in the film alongside Zach Cherry and Kali Reis, who promised fans that Cregger's original story was "amazing."

"I think you guys are going to be blown away by his imagination, his ideas, and this kind of comedic journey through this crazy, wild time in this Resident Evil story," the actress told Screen Rant in January 2026. "I think you're going to be pleasantly surprised."

Here's everything to know about the new 2026 Resident Evil movie.

What is Resident Evil about?

Resident Evil follows a medical courier named Bryan (Abrams) "who unwittingly finds himself in an action-packed, non-stop race for survival as one fateful, horrifying night collapses around him in chaos,” according to the official logline, per The Hollywood Reporter.

Cregger told IGN in April 2026 that though the film "takes place alongside the events of Resident Evil 2," it's an entirely original tale.

"I like to think that everything that's going on in the police station could be happening in this world," the director explained. "This is just another dude on another mission on the other side of town and what's going on with him."

Cregger continued, "It's not canon, in that I'm not using the characters, but it's canon in that it lives in the actual day of reckoning in Raccoon City.”

After starring in Cregger's hit horror movie Weapons, Abrams is reuniting with the director in the Resident Evil reboot.

Cregger described the actor's leading role as "an avatar" from the game, telling Deadline in April 2026 that he's "just a normal guy."

"He's not particularly good at combat in any way, shape, or form," the director continued. "He's athletic, but he's not an athlete, he's just a guy. He's just a good natured, hapless dude who gets sucked into a nightmare."

Cregger added, "And so it was really fun to just think, how would I react authentically if I saw a mutant dog attack me? What would that gamut of emotion look like? And Austin's just so fun to watch, he's perfect for it.”

The Resident Evil cast also includes Cherry, who plays a hospital scientist, and Reis, an ex-military character.

Johnno Wilson and Paul Walter Hauser are also set to star, per Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter.

Is there a trailer for Resident Evil?

Yes, the first trailer for Resident Evil was released in April 2026. The teaser shows Abrams' character calling his girlfriend to tell her that he's in a "seriously f—ed up situation" and that there's a chance they might not talk again.

While he's leaving this voicemail, scenes flash to him encountering mutant creatures and narrowly escaping their violent attacks.
