The music industry lost one of its most influential figures. Legendary record producer and music executive Clive Davis died at the age of 94 on June 22, 2026. The New York Times was the first to report the news of his death. With a career spanning more than six decades, Davis helped shape the sound of modern music by discovering and mentoring some of the biggest artists, including Whitney Houston, Alicia Keys, Barry Manilow, Bruce Springsteen and more.

As many reflect on the remarkable legacy that Davis left behind, Hollywood Life has listed five facts to know about the late music mogul below.

Clive Davis Started His Career as a Lawyer

Before becoming one of the most powerful executives in the music business, Davis studied at New York University and later graduated from Harvard Law School. He joined Columbia Records’ legal department in 1960 and quickly climbed the corporate ladder.

By 1967, he had become the president of Columbia Records. It was then that he began reshaping the label’s artist roster.

Clive Helped Launch the Careers of Countless Music Legends

Davis was known for his extraordinary ability to spot talent. Throughout his career, he signed or helped artists including Houston and Springsteen. He later played a key role in the success of many other chart-topping performers, including Kelly Clarkson.

He Founded Arista Records and J Records

After leaving Columbia Records in the 1970s, Davis founded Arista Records, which became one of the most successful labels in the industry.

Decades later, he launched J Records, which solidified his reputation as a visionary executive.

Clive Was Inducted Into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

Davis’ impact on music earned him some of the industry’s highest honors. He won multiple Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2000.

Davis’ influence extended far beyond producing records, though, and he helped define the careers of generations of artists across rock, pop, R&B and hip-hop.

He Remained Active in Music Into His 90s

Even in his elder years, Davis continued working in the music business. He served as the chief creative officer at Sony Music Entertainment. He was also known for hosting his annual pre-Grammy gala, which is one of the industry’s most prestigious events.

Unfortunately, in June 2026, Davis died at age 94 after experiencing health issues, including a hospitalization for respiratory problems. According to a statement from the record producer’s family, per People, they called him “the iconic music legend whose vision, instincts, and relentless pursuit of excellence shaped the soundtrack of countless lives.”

To them, though, Davis was “Dad and Granddaddy, the steady presence at the center of our lives, the source of wisdom, strength, encouragement, and unconditional love,” the statement continued. “No matter how extraordinary his professional accomplishments, he never lost sight of what mattered most: the people he loved.”
