NEED TO KNOW

  • Demi Schweers shared an emotional update on her multiple sclerosis (MS) journey
  • After being diagnosed with the disease in 2020, the influencer said a recent MRI revealed that she has developed a new lesion on her spinal cord
  • “I was so upset, numb, sad, scared, and so many more emotions wrapped up in one,” Schweers said

Demi Schweers has shared an update about her journey with multiple sclerosis (MS).

On Thursday, August 6, the influencer, 32, responded to a critic who commented on a TikTok video of hers:
“What happened to Demi’s fake MS journey?”

Revealing the “s—ty news” that, after being diagnosed with the disease in 2020, a recent MRI revealed that she has developed a new lesion on her spinal cord, Schweers said, “I’ve been really in my head the past few days and trying to stay as positive as possible,”

Schweers, who has documented her journey with MS, as well as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), alongside her husband, Tom Schweers, wrote in the caption of her TikTok, “I was diagnosed with MS in 2020. At my worst, I couldn’t walk, I lost vision in my right eye, and I had chronic fatigue and brain fog.”

“Thankfully since 2021 I’ve been stable, no new lesions, found a medication that was working for me and felt good even through back to back pregnancies,” she continued, then adding, “That all changed this past Sunday.”

Though the mom of two explained that she isn’t usually “too worried” about her frequent MRIs and their results, a recent scan revealed something out of the ordinary.

“I got a notification that my results were ready,” Schweers explained. “I logged on and saw the words ‘NEW LESION: present, upper vertical cord’ & ‘T1characteristics: T1 hypointensity.’ ”

Multiple sclerosis is a disease that causes the breakdown of the protective covering of nerves, resulting in numbness, weakness, trouble walking, vision changes and other symptoms, according to the Mayo Clinic.

The disease can lead to scars or lesions, which may slow or block signals from the brain.

Continuing her TikTok caption, Schweers admitted of finding out she had a new lesion, “I was so upset, numb, sad, scared, and so many more emotions wrapped up in one.”

Detailing that she may have to wait four to five months for another MRI, which will tell her more about her condition, the social media star said, “As of right now, I don’t really know what this means for me in my health and I’m honestly a little bit scared.”

“The only thing I can do right now is wait to find out when my MRI will be scheduled and go from there. I’m gonna continue to live my life as normally as I can without getting in my head,” she added.

“Over sharing all of this so someone else in their health journey feels less alone. Having chronic illness and one that’s typically invisible is so difficult – but we’re in this journey together,” said Schweers.

In her TikTok video, Schweers — co-founder of Iris Nutrition — got emotional while discussing her health issues.

“F—. I don’t even know what to say,” she said, pausing to stop herself from breaking down in tears.

“I just hope that insurance approves this new medication and I’m able to get stable again and everything stays the same. Okay, I need to process this,” added Schweers.
