NEED TO KNOW

  • Two San Francisco roommates endured two months of scratching noises before discovering raccoons living inside their walls

  • The mother raccoon gave birth in the wall and eventually broke through into one roommate’s bedroom

  • The roommates moved out after the raccoons were removed and received $4,600 in reduced rent and expenses

Two roommates in San Francisco spent nearly two months listening to unknown intruders inside their walls before they learned they were sharing their space with a family of raccoons.

Isaac Brodkin shared his story with local ABC affiliate KGO-TV, revealing that he and his roommate first heard scratching noises coming from inside their walls in April. “It kept waking me up, and I couldn’t sleep, and that’s when I knew it had to be some kind of animal,” Brodkin told the outlet.

After researching the noises and realizing they most likely had raccoons in their walls, the roommates contacted the property managers at Kenney & Everest Real Estate of San Francisco. The property managers sent over an inspector who confirmed they had raccoons and sprayed a repellent. Unfortunately, the roommates’ unwanted house guests remained.

“The sound just kept getting more and more intense, just like a horror movie would, and I couldn’t sleep,” Brodkin said. “So I moved into the living room to sleep there.”

Brodkin was concerned the animals might break through the wall, which they ultimately did. “My roommate heard the animals running around in my bedroom. He opened the door and saw the hole,” he said. It was at this point Brodkin realized a mother raccoon had given birth in the wall.

In addition to hearing the baby raccoons chittering, Brodkin said he could hear “sucking sounds, like feeding” coming from inside the wall.

Once the raccoons made themselves a hole to come and go as they pleased, the resident forfeited his bedroom to his four-legged guests. “We kept the bedroom door shut. If I needed to get my clothes, I’d run in real quick, grab them and run right out,” he shared.

Brodkin and his roommate moved out in mid-June, but right before they left, an exterminator opened up the wall to remove the family. Sadly, the mother died after becoming trapped.

“The mother raccoon fell through the wall and trapped itself. I was sad about that because I felt like I’d gotten to know this family by living so close for two months,” Brodkin told KGO-TV.

He added that he hoped the baby raccoons were “living their best life” now that they’ve been removed from the apartment.

Brodkin and his roommate were given around $4,600 “in reduced rent and expenses” by the property managers to assist with their move.
