Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s sunny family vacation looked just like the ones the Duke of Sussex used to enjoy as a child.
This week, the Duchess of Sussex, 44, shared a collection of photos from her and Harry’s recent trip to Europe with their children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5.
The collection spanned the family’s travels, which included stops in Portugal and the U.K., as well as a poignant visit to Althorp, Princess Diana’s childhood home and final resting place. Even some of the more carefree moments prompted comparisons to Diana.

Royal watchers noted that Meghan’s simple black one-piece swimsuit was reminiscent of one Princess Diana wore during a family beach vacation in Nevis in January 1993 with Harry, Prince William and family friends.

On another trip, to the British Virgin Islands in April 1990, the Princess of Wales was photographed allowing her sons and their friends to bury her in the sand.

Diana’s playful nature is echoed in another of Meghan’s family shots, which shows Harry tossing Lilibet into the air, with the camera catching her mid-flight just before she splashes into the pool.

The pool pics may have been taken at Althorp, as a poolside shot of Meghan appears to feature Harry’s uncle, Charles Spencer, and his wife, Cat Jarman, in the background.

The family’s time at Althorp is also thought to have included a visit to Diana’s memorial. Another one of Meghan’s photos shows Lilibet, Archie and Harry walking through the grounds of the estate, with the Duke of Sussex and his son carrying flowers.
The late princess is laid to rest on an island at the center of the ornamental lake known as The Round Oval within Althorp Park’s Pleasure Garden. Charles Spencer wrote in his book that its remoteness was intentional, with the lake “[acting] as a buffer against the interventions of the insane and ghoulish, the thick mud presenting a further line of defense.”

Diana’s brother has said it brings him comfort to know that Prince William and Prince Harry are able to visit their mother’s burial place privately.
“I think it’s very important for them to be there with her,” he previously told PEOPLE. “It is, luckily, very tranquil here, and they can come and go as they wish whenever they want. And that’s very lovely for me to know that.”
