NEED TO KNOW

  • Noah Kahan criticized Donald Trump for using his song “American Cars” in a social media post without approval
  • The song was removed from Trump’s Instagram but remains on the White House TikTok account
  • Other artists, including Katy Perry and Bruce Springsteen, have also condemned the Trump administration for using their music without consent

Noah Kahan is calling out the Trump administration.

President Donald Trump visited General Motors in Michigan earlier this week and shared posts to Instagram and TikTok soundtracked by Kahan’s hit The Great Divide track “American Cars.” The singer-songwriter expressed his disapproval over the use of his song in a comment on Trump’s post.

“Would never approve of my music being used in support of you or this administration,” wrote Kahan, 29. The song’s co-writer Gabe Simon also expressed disapproval in his own comment.

Kaelan Dorr, Deputy Assistant to the President and White House Deputy Communications Director, issued a response in a post on X. “Symptoms of TDS apparently include having a northern attitude,” wrote Dorr, who used an acronym for the term “Trump derangement syndrome.”

“American Kids” has since been removed from Trump’s Instagram post, but the song remains in a version posted to the official White House account on TikTok.

Kahan is among many musicians — including Ariana Grande, Kesha, Céline Dion, Bruce Springsteen, Linkin Park, Neil Young, Olivia Rodrigo, Sabrina Carpenter and Radiohead — who’ve instructed the Trump administration to not use their music on social media.

Earlier this month, Katy Perry slammed the White House for using her song “Firework” in a video showing footage of military strikes.

“I am deeply appalled and angry to see ‘Firework’ used on the @WhiteHouse TikTok account as a backing track for video footage of military strikes,” wrote the pop superstar on X. “I did not approve this, I was not asked, and I absolutely do not condone it.”

Perry continued, “I wrote this song to be an anthem of hope, healing, and inner strength for people going through their darkest personal moments. To see a message of self-worth and upliftment weaponized to soundtrack destruction and violence is a complete violation of everything my song stands for.”

“My music is for bringing people together, not celebrating warfare,” concluded the “Never Really Over” artist.
