NEED TO KNOW

  • Noah Kahan apologized to fans after canceling a Citi Field show due to severe weather conditions
  • The musician explained the cancellation was unavoidable and expressed regret for disappointing fans who traveled and waited in the rain
  • “I promise you we did everything, everything we could. Weird s— to try to reschedule it, and I’m sorry,” the “Stick Season” singer said

Fans who were left disappointed after Noah Kahan’s Saturday night show was canceled shortly before it was set to begin received a heartfelt apology from the musician the following evening at Citi Field.

Impending weather conditions forced Kahan and his team to initially delay the July 18 show taking place at the New York Mets stadium in Queens, pushing back set times and cutting the support performances. Later, as thunderstorms and lightning moved into the area, the decision was made to cancel the show entirely due to inclement weather. “The first priority is always to keep everyone safe,” Kahan HQ social accounts explained.

The next night, the singer-songwriter addressed the situation directly from the stage during what was meant to be his second show of the weekend.

“If you know me, I’ve been touring for about nine years and I’ve probably played at least 500 shows,” Kahan, 29, began. “I’ve canceled six in my life — it’s only ever been when we cannot do anything else but cancel the show. I know you guys are all here, but I don’t expect any sympathy at all.”

He added, “I’m so f—ing sorry for the folks that sat all day out in the rain and traveled. I’ve been thinking about you guys, and I’m really sorry. And I promise you, I would play in a f—ing volcano, the hole of a volcano for y’all. And I —I’m so sorry.”

Kahan then spoke specifically to those who were upset that the previous evening’s show had been canceled rather than postponed, as is often preferred but not always possible given stadium schedules and tour routing.

“I promise you we did everything, everything we could. Weird s— to try to reschedule it, and I’m sorry,” the “Stick Season” singer admitted. “I just feel horrible, and I know people will see this and I just want you to know I’m really sorry. You deserve better than that.”

Kahan continued, “I have sympathy for the folks that missed out,” reiterating that he didn’t want any back from the crowd.

Soon after, iconic N.Y.C. duo Elmo and Cookie Monster appeared onscreen for the celebrity cameo portion of the evening. (At Fenway Park earlier this month, Kahan got a ring from New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye, Boston Red Sox legend David Ortiz and former Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski ahead of performing “She Calls Me Back” in Boston.)

“We just want to know if you sang ‘Cookie Season’ yet,” Cookie Monster playfully prodded. “It’s ‘Stick Season,’ Cookie Monster!” Elmo corrected him.

The Sesame Street characters offered their encouragement to Kahan, who previously appeared on the children’s program. “We wanted to come and wish you a great concert,” Elmo added, “We’re very proud of you, and we hope that you are proud of yourself too.”

Kahan then welcomed opener Gigi Perez to the stage for a duet version of “She Calls Me Back.”

“New York that was one for the ages,” the musician posted to Instagram Monday afternoon. “I can’t believe I get to hang out with you guys.”
