My mom and I are constantly swapping clothes, accessories, and shoes. But more than that, we’re also constantly tapping one another for fashion advice.
She likes my style because it’s modern and classic at the same time, while I’m in awe of hers for the way it garners compliments left and right. Every time I’m with her, someone makes a positive remark, and then when I’m not, I always end up hearing about it.
Knowing this information, we teamed up to share the summer staples and statement pieces we’ve got our sights set on. Including roomy tote bags, the comfy shorts I wore to Coachella, and more for as little as $12.

Kalidi Tote Bag

For as long as I can remember, my mom has been a big-bag lady. And that’s because she always has everything with her. Need a brush? She’s got it. Want to reapply lipstick? There are probably four different shades of pink at the bottom of her bag. Getting hungry? Here’s a snack to nibble on.
TL;DR: She loves a bag with a lot of room, and this one recently caught her eye. It has a “glossy finish” (She’s a fan of anything sparkly and shiny!) and has a “boxy design that’s suitable for everyday use,” she notes. The printed words also give it a similar appeal to the popular Marc Jacobs carryalls.

If you’re on the hunt for a “casual, boho summer style,” look no further. This fun top is not only easy to layer under jean jackets and on top of sheer long-sleeved shirts, but it’s also breezy without having a super low neckline.
Oyoangle Strapless Flower Bandeau Top

I’m guessing that my mom picked out this shirt because it looks so much like a much pricier Cynthia Rowley top that is seemingly no longer available. My mom says it’s a “modern statement piece that instantly elevates any outfit,” and I definitely agree. You could wear it with everything from jeans for date night or a dressy skirt for brunches, baby showers, and more.

Speaking of midi skirts, my mom and I were walking around Aritzia last week and she pulled a pleated one off the rack while proclaiming, “Isn’t this so cute?!” She didn’t end up buying, but I may very well surprise her with this nearly identical style for Mother’s Day.

Elleven Knee-Length Bermuda Shorts

Moving on to my picks, these are the exact shorts I wore on day three of Coachella, a.k.a the day that everyone typically wears their comfiest outfits. They genuinely felt as comfortable as my pajama shorts and they looked even cuter when rolled Kendall Jenner-style.
The length also came in clutch when sitting down — I didn’t feel like everything was showing. And if all that weren’t enough, my mom was there when I tried them on and said, “Ooh, do they have those in another color?”
Lumister Crewneck T-Shirt

T-shirts are pretty much all I wear in the spring and summer, so I’ve been experimenting with ways to switch it up while staying true to my style. Enter: T-shirts that are fitted around the waist but baggy everywhere else. In other words, they’re comfortable but nice and shapely.
I just picked up one that was slightly more expensive than this (which, of course, my mom also ended up buying!), but if I had known this one existed, I would have gone this route.

I’m in full summer mode now, which means I need all the cover-ups I can find. This one looks light and airy for the pool or beach, but I could also see myself dressing it up with a tank top or something underneath. Plus, it’s only $12 and it’s something I know my mom would “borrow,” too.
