- An Australian mom discovered she won over $1.1 million while scrolling through Facebook after buying a lottery ticket
- She and her partner plan to buy a home and save for their children’s futures with their winnings
- Their winning ticket was purchased at a grocery store near Brisbane
A mom's casual scroll through her Facebook feed led to her learning that she had won the lottery and was now a millionaire!
The unnamed Australian woman and her partner held one of the winning Saturday Gold Lotto tickets, worth a whopping $1.6 million Australian dollars, the equivalent of roughly $1.13 million U.S. dollars. The draw was announced on Saturday, June 6.
Because the couple had not registered their entry with The Lott Members Club, officials from the lottery had no way of contacting the ticket holders and instead had to wait for them to check their ticket and come forward, according to a press release by The Lott.

“We're in so much shock,” the woman said when she was told that she had won.
“The news agency that we purchased the ticket from had posted on their Facebook page that they sold a division one winning entry over the weekend and it reminded me that we purchased a ticket,” she told the release.
“I checked the ticket immediately and it was a big shock. We're still trying to process it all,” she added.
The couple, who are Queensland residents, bought their ticket from an IGA grocery store in Loganholme, near Brisbane.
The excited winner told lottery officials that they had many plans for what to spend their prize money on.
“There's so much that we'd like to do,” she said in the release. “We're going to plan to buy our very own home. Then we'll put some away for the children's futures.”
“There will be some celebrations for sure,” she added.
The IGA Loganholme store owner, Darrell Dhnaram, said his team was celebrating the winning ticket.
“We're absolutely thrilled to have sold our first division one winning entry here at IGA Loganholme,” he told The Lott.

“It's incredibly exciting for our team to know one of our customers has had such a life-changing win,” Dhnaram added. “We hope this win brings plenty of joy to the lucky ticketholder and their family, and we'll certainly be celebrating the news with our local community.”
The mom's big win comes after a father in Canada recently won a grand prize over $2.4 million in Canadian dollars (over $1,7 million in U.S. dollars).

Kevin Mongeau of northern Ontario, Canada, won the jackpot, according to a news release shared by the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation on, May 29.
The foundation said the lucky father of a 2-year-old girl plans to use the money to build a new house for his family.
“We're just renting right now, so I think I want to build a house with it, maybe not a two-million-dollar house, but definitely a nice house and then the rest, you know,” Mongeau told CEO Glenn Craig.
