Kurt Russell finds a lot of opportunity in Colorado.
Speaking with PEOPLE for an exclusive interview at the Madison FYC Panel in Los Angeles on May 30, the 75-year-old actor opened up about leaving Los Angeles for Colorado, where he and partner Goldie Hawn own a log-cabin lodge.
The residence, Russell said, allows him to do "the things that I want to do on a day-to-day basis.”
“What I want to look at, what I want to be a part of — all the things that Colorado has to offer,” he further explained. “I wanted to eventually get into the ranching life."
Added Russell: "When Goldie and I got together, a couple of years later, we both built a ranch there together, where our family has grown up. That was 40 years ago.”

Still, Russell emphasized that, while he wasn't trying to “escape” Los Angeles when he made the decision to leave, it wasn't a common choice among his entertainment industry peers at the time.
“I wasn't escaping. I was just living where I live,” he said. “I was fortunate that it really didn't make any difference. But when I did it, nobody else was doing that. I had many people tell me, ‘Well, that's goodbye. That's it.' I said, ‘Well, we'll see.' "
Russell said he's since noticed that more people have started moving away from Los Angeles in the years after he made the living location change himself.
“I don't dislike L.A.,” he told PEOPLE. “It's just not my preference in terms of how I like to live my life.”
“You've got to understand something about the area of Old Snowmass,” he added. “Everybody who lives there, they live there because they want to. I can't say that about L.A.”

Russell also told PEOPLE that he and Hawn, 80, wanted to take advantage of sharing the experience of Colorado with their kids.
Together they are parents to children Boston Russell, whom Kurt welcomed with ex-wife Season Hubley; Oliver Hudson and Kate Hudson, from Goldie's previous relationship with Bill Hudson; and Wyatt Russell, the couple's youngest, whom they welcomed together.
“It's very different from living in a city,” Russell told PEOPLE of the famous family's life in Colorado. “They grew up with a good dose of what nature can offer. There are difficulties to it, but there are also great rewards to it. I'm just more comfortable there.”
“It was like the way I grew up in Maine,” he continued, recalling his own childhood. “I suppose, once you're exposed to that kind of thing, it's always home. Everything we did there in terms of what we built and what we have in terms of being able to offer in life for our children, I'm really, really happy that we were able to do that.”
