Jessica Biel is back in movies, and she’s kicking off her return with an action-packed adaptation of Mattel’s toy brand Matchbox.
Apple TV, Skydance Media and Mattel Studios released the trailer for Matchbox the Movie on Saturday, July 25, while the film’s stars promoted the movie at San Diego Comic-Con. Biel, 44, costars in the film — inspired by the widely popular vehicle toy brand — with John Cena, Arturo Castro, Sam Richardson, Danai Gurira and Teyonah Parris.
Matchbox the Movie “is an action-packed, globetrotting adventure about a group of friends since childhood who have their lives upended when undercover CIA agent Sean (Cena), their long-absent former leader, returns to their small town and unwittingly gets them embroiled in a frantic international pursuit to save the world,” reads an official synopsis for the film.
The movie’s trailer shows Cena’s character Sean as he returns to his hometown and reconnects with old friends, with whom he used to play with Matchbox toys — until they are all drugged and wake up on a plane, kidnapped by CIA operatives who think Sean and his friends have stolen a nuclear warhead. The group elects to find the bomb that has been stolen and return it to the U.S. government in order to resume their lives as normal.

For Biel, the movie is her first since she appeared in the 2017 film Shock and Awe. In the years between, the actress — who shares sons Silas and Phineas with husband Justin Timberlake — has appeared in television series like BoJack Horseman, Limetown, Candy and The Better Sister. Cena, meanwhile, most recently costarred with Eric Andre in the Netflix comedy Little Brother.
Sam Hargrave (Extraction) directed Matchbox the Movie, which was written by David Coggeshall (The Family Plan). Corey Stoll, Bill Camp and Golshifteh Farahani also star in the film.
