The former NFL defensive end, 35, died from an acute combination of fentanyl, cocaine and ethanol intoxication, according to online records from the Maricopa County Office of the Medical Examiner obtained by KKCO 11, AZFamily and the New York Post.

"With many tears and broken hearts, yet anchored in the unshakable certainty that our precious Josh Mauro is now healed and made new — living in the presence of the Lord — we humbly covet your prayers as our family walks through the devastating loss of our amazing son, brother, uncle, grandson and friend," his dad, Greg Mauro, wrote on Facebook.

"On Thursday, April 23, Josh breathed his last breath on this earth and his first breath in heaven," he continued. "The Lord has been our strength in this unimaginable moment. Your prayers for continued strength and comfort mean more to us than words could ever express."

After graduating from Stanford in 2013, Josh spent six seasons with the Arizona Cardinals. He later went on to spend a single season with three different teams — the New York Giants in 2018, followed by a year with the Las Vegas Raiders and another with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2020.

Over the course of his 80 career games, Josh had 130 tackles and five sacks.

“We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of Josh Mauro,” the Cardinals wrote on X after his death. “Our thoughts are with his family, friends and all who knew him. We extend our deepest condolences to everyone grieving this loss.”

Sports podcaster Rudy Reyes also remembered the late athlete as nothing less than an “outstanding person.”

"Saddens me greatly,” he wrote on X. “One thing to note, he was in Steelers Camp but didn't make the cut. I interviewed Josh Mauro prior to going to the pros. He was an outstanding person. My condolences go to his family right now."
