Emmy Rossum says she has to “set limits” for herself when it comes to scrolling online.

The actress opened up about her social media habits during a recent PEOPLE in 10 interview and explained that, for her, it’s all about finding balance.

“I’m online in periods a lot, like too much, and then I have to go offline and I have to set limits and I’m thinking about getting a Brick,” she said, referring to a device used to limit phone usage. “The algorithm is messing with my brain.”

“But I really do try to balance it out,” she continued. “I mean, there is so much of what we do [online] … we have meetings virtually now. Our life is so digital now that I think it’s important to go sit in Central Park and look at a tree. I have my bench where I go and look at my tree at least once a day.”

Rossum also told PEOPLE that she believes too much time online can negatively impact a person’s self-dialogue — and she is especially mindful of this when it comes to her kids.

The Shameless star shares a daughter, 5, and son, 3, with husband Sam Esmail.

“I feel like they can read my mind sometimes,” she said of her kids. “So [I’m being] more careful about how I talk to myself in my head. Because I feel like they can get a vibe of how I treat myself.”

“And I think too much time online can cause us to be unkind to ourselves, through compare and despair,” Rossum continued. “So, I think it’s important to talk to ourselves kindly, to be our own best friend, because that’s what I want for my kids. I’m always going to be their best friend, but when I’m not here, I want them to have each other and be their own best friend.”

Rossum is set to star in the new Hulu psychological crime drama series Furious, which premieres on July 27. She plays FBI Agent Alice Black, who “is on the hunt for a mysterious and calculating female serial killer,” per an official synopsis.

“Both walk their own paths toward justice, and as their lives start to intertwine, the line between right and wrong begins to blur,” the synopsis adds.

Speaking with PEOPLE about the project, the actress said she was “really fascinated by women in law enforcement” and prepared for the role in part by shadowing and training with former and current FBI agents and NYPD detectives.

Rossum said one of her favorite parts about filming the series was connecting with other women on the set.

“I definitely felt the sisterhood with [executive producer] Elizabeth Meriwether and [costar] Quincy Tyler Bernstine,” she explained. “I definitely felt the female power. It’s just incredible to be part of a show that shoots in New York City where I live and love to work and to have the city be its own character in the story.”

Furious, which also stars Jake Lacy, Lola Petticrew and Scoot McNairy, premieres on Hulu on July 27.
