NEED TO KNOW

  • A man was struck and killed while helping a motorist change a flat tire
  • The victim has been identified as 29-year-old firefighter Cameron Duvall
  • The motorist driving the car was charged with aggravated vehicular homicide, aggravated vehicular assault and more

A motorist struck and killed a firefighter while he was helping someone with a flat tire.

The man and a woman sustained serious injuries in a three-vehicle crash that occurred on Saturday, July 18, at around 3:00 a.m. local time in Pepper Pike, Ohio, according to a press release from the Pepper Pike Police Department.

Police said they discovered three vehicles involved in the crash upon arrival. The man and woman were found between two vehicles.

Officials initiated lifesaving measures for the victims. The male died at the scene, and the woman was transported to a hospital by the Pepper Pike Fire Department and is now in stable condition.

An investigation revealed that the first vehicle was disabled with a flat tire, and the driver called for roadside assistance. A man and woman arrived to help and parked in front of the disabled car.

“While they were working near the trunk of the disabled vehicle, a third motorist struck them and the disabled vehicle,” police said.

The motorist driving the third car was arrested and charged with aggravated vehicular homicide, aggravated vehicular assault, operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, and failure to maintain an assured clear distance ahead, per police.

“The City of Pepper Pike extends our deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of these two victims, along with everyone affected by this tragic incident,” police wrote in the press release.

Cleveland 19 reported that the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the man as Cameron Duvall.

The 29-year-old was a firefighter with the North Randall Fire Department, per a statement from North Randall Mayor David Smith and North Randall Fire Department Chief Marshall Shorts.

“Cameron joined the Village of North Randall Fire Department in 2022 and quickly became a respected and valued member of our public safety family. Beyond his service to the department, Cameron was also a resident of the Village of North Randall and took great pride in serving the community he called home,” the statement read.

“His dedication, professionalism and willingness to serve others exemplified the very best of our department and our Village,” the statement continued. “Cameron’s loss is deeply felt by his fellow firefighters, police officers, Village employees, elected officials and the entire North Randall community.”

North Randall Professional Firefighters IAFF 5365 called Duvall “a hero, a brother and a friend” in a tribute.

“Thank you for your service, your strength and your brotherhood. You will never be forgotten,” the statement read.

The group also posted a photo of Duvall’s firefighter uniform with his name on the back of the jacket.

PEOPLE reached out to the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office on Sunday, July 19, but did not receive an immediate response.
