NEED TO KNOW

  • The Friday Night Lights cast reunited in Austin, Texas, on Friday, May 29, to celebrate the show’s 20th anniversary
  • Connie Britton and Kyle Chandler recalled a dinner that led to them agreeing to portray a realistic, supportive marriage on-screen
  • Cast members also reflected on the show’s legacy and celebrated Michael B. Jordan and Jesse Plemons’ recent awards season success

Connie Britton and Kyle Chandler are revealing the moment that shaped their on-screen bond in Friday Night Lights.

While attending the Friday Night Lights 20-Year Reunion at the Paramount Theatre in Austin on Friday, May 29, Britton, 59, and Chandler, 60, recalled how they decided to approach their on-screen dynamic as the married couple Tami and Eric Taylor.

"We agreed very early on," said Britton. "In the first night that we shot together, we went out to dinner for Japanese food and we talked about what was important to us about marriage and relationships."

Chandler added, "As I recall it, we had a dinner to try to get to know one another … I realized, she's funny, she thought I was funny."

Britton emphasized that they were on the same page about wanting their characters' marriage to shine, rather than leaning into any dramatic plots involving cheating or ruining their love.

"Somewhere in the midst of that, we both were like, 'We don't want our characters to have affairs, we don't want it about pitting the two of them against each other.' Because most marriages, the couples just try to make it work with each other and get through life with each other and we really wanted to show a picture of that kind of marriage as opposed to the very overdramatized. And we did say to the writers, 'Don't do that,' " she said.

During a May 2025 appearance on Watch What Happens Live, Britton revealed that Chandler hated doing table reads for Friday Night Lights.

“I think [Kyle] probably said that he wasn't going to do it," she said. “Kyle has notoriously always hated table reads. And the truth of the matter is with that show we didn't really do table reads because it was really just like — we kind of just got into it and did it, and it was on your feet and the whole thing.”

Britton played a version of Tami in the 2004 film, before starring alongside Chandler in all five seasons of the show. She received two Emmy nominations for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, but admitted to Parade that she almost turned down the role.

“In the film there was very little for me to do, even less so by the time it came out,” Britton recalled. “Whatever I had done was mostly on the cutting room floor. When the TV show came around I said, ‘No thank you.' "

The pair were joined by their costars Gaius Charles, Scott Porter, Brad Leland, Adrianne Palicki, Derek Phillips, Jesse Plemons, Stacey Oristano, Louanne Stephens and Aimee Teegarden, along with showrunner Jason Katims, director Jeffrey Reiner, and writers David Hudgins and Kerry Ehrin at the Friday Night Lights 20-Year Reunion.

While at the event, they accepted the 2026 "Texas Made" Award at the ATX TV Festival, according to CultureMap Austin.

Porter, 46, told PEOPLE at MPTF's 2026 NextGen Summer Party at The Aster in Los Angeles on Sunday, May 31, that the reunion was "full of elation."

"People say, 'You can't go home,' but we felt like we did," he said. "We got to just have dinner and lunch together and hang out and walk the streets of the town that we used to work in, that so many of us started our careers in. And it was just incredible to look back. Understand that 20 years ago we did something that I think people feel is pretty special now and has become a legacy show where generations are now handing it down their family line."

Porter also spoke about getting to watch Plemons, 38, who played Landry Clarke, and Michael B. Jordan, who played Vince Howard, find success during the recent awards season.

Jordan, 39, won his first Oscar earlier this year for his role in Sinners, while Plemons was nominated for Bugonia.

"One of the coolest moments of the entire awards circuit this year was watching Michael B. walk up on stage to get his award and turn and point to Jesse who is also sitting in the front row because he's also nominated," Porter said.

He added, "We had an incredible collection of people in our cast. And I'm not saying talent, I'm saying human beings. So to see those two human beings that I'm just so proud of almost like on a brotherly level be up there and getting recognized the way that they do and still find the time to find each other and make sure that they connect, that's what really is all about."
