In October 2024, Lee Gilley was arrested and charged with capital murder in connection with the death of his pregnant wife, Christa Bauer Gilley — but he later fled the country before he could stand trial.
On the night of Oct. 7, 2024, Lee, a software consultant, called 911 from his family's Houston home, claiming that his wife, a physical therapist named Christa, had died by suicide through a drug overdose. Responding officers found Christa unresponsive and she was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead the next day. She was nine weeks pregnant at the time of her death, according to court documents.
"They were crazy in love," an acquaintance of the couple told PEOPLE in May 2026. "It's so hard to imagine. They were the happiest couple in the world."
However, Christa's death was ruled a homicide three days later, and Lee was subsequently arrested on a capital murder charge in connection with her death and the death of their unborn child. Lee was released on bail — and in May 2026, he cut off his court-ordered ankle monitor and fled the U.S., according to the federal criminal complaint against him.
So, how did Lee Gilley escape? Here's everything to know about where he is now — and if he'll face extradition.

Lee and Christa first met at Clemson University, going on one date before reconnecting years after graduation. In 2014, after Christa earned her doctorate, they settled in Houston, where she worked at Memorial Hermann caring for patients awaiting heart and lung transplants.
They married in 2017 and later welcomed two children — a daughter and a son. At the time of her death, Christa was nine weeks pregnant with their third child.
However, things weren't blissful in their marriage. Prosecutors alleged in a pretrial court filing that they intended to present evidence at Lee's trial that showed that he had a sexual affair with a woman in San Diego in or around 2023. They also claimed that months before Christa's death, he posted on Reddit that he was "bored" in his marriage.
On Oct. 7, 2024, police responded to a call of a reported suicide at the home of Lee and Christa. According to what Lee told authorities, Christa and Lee argued after he purchased an SUV without Christa's knowledge. He then claimed she went to bed and three hours later, he found her unresponsive and performed CPR on her. When paramedics arrived, they rushed Christa to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead on Oct. 8.
Lee claimed Christa took her own life, but hospital staff said she had “bruising and apparent trauma to her face,” per a police statement. On Oct. 11, her death was ruled a homicide caused by compression of the neck and back by a Harris County medical examiner.
Court documents also allege that Lee later told police Christa was not suicidal and did not use drugs.
“When I heard that, I said, 'Nope, absolutely not. She did not overdose on drugs,' " Christa's coworker Kathryn Reeves told PEOPLE in May 2026, adding that her friend had been planning on starting her own business and moving her family to South Carolina. "She had plans. She had plans. It was just complete disbelief. It was awful."

On Oct. 11, 2024, Lee was arrested and charged with capital murder in the death of Christa and their unborn child. He pleaded not guilty.
Less than a week later — on Oct. 17 — Lee was released on a $1 million bond. He was ordered to surrender his passport and wear an ankle monitor.
In May 2026, Lee cut off his ankle monitor, just weeks before he was set to stand trial
On May 1, 2026, Lee allegedly cut off his court-ordered ankle monitor and fled the country. Harris County Pretrial Services received an automated alert when he did so and unsuccessfully attempted to contact Lee before he left.
According to CNN, his trial was scheduled to start on May 29.
"Obviously, it was devastating to the family, and I think that they were hoping to have the trial and to have him held accountable," Tim Ballengee, the attorney representing Christa's family, told PEOPLE.

After allegedly removing his ankle monitor, Lee traveled to Canada and then flew to Italy, where he showed immigration officials Belgian identification documents that were found to be forged, according to a federal criminal complaint.
Lee was traveling under an alias, “Lejeune Jean Luc Oliver," and was attempting to use a false and forged passport and other identification documents, per NBC News.
He appeared in a court in Turin, Italy, on May 11, where he made a statement maintaining his innocence.
"My wife is dead, and they wrongly blamed me. That's why I no longer have faith in the justice system. I am innocent. I did not kill my wife," he told the judge, per NBC News. "The only crime I committed was fleeing. I fled to avoid being killed. I went to great lengths to escape and seek protection in Italy."
Where is Lee Gilley now?
Lee has not returned to the U.S. and remains detained in Italy. His attorney, Dick DeGuerin, claims Christa died of a pre-existing condition called methemoglobinemia, a rare blood disorder that affects hemoglobin and can cause life-threatening complications, per the Cleveland Clinic.
The capital murder charge against Lee carries a potential death penalty, if Lee is found guilty. The Harris County District Attorney's Office has not publicly said whether it intends to seek the death penalty.
Since the death penalty has been abolished in Italy, authorities may block extradition unless prosecutors officially decline to seek capital punishment, according to KHOU 11.
For now, Lee's trial has been delayed indefinitely, with KHOU 11 reporting that it was "off the docket" as of May 2026.
It is not currently known when or if Lee will return to the U.S. However, the Harris County District Attorney's Office said it is coordinating with U.S. and Italian authorities to secure his return.
