NEED TO KNOW

  • An Ohio woman is doing just fine after her failure to answer calls prompted a welfare check
  • Police arrived to find the 91-year-old safe and sound, playing video games
  • The woman was busy attempting to beat her previous record on a level in the game, according to local police

An elderly Ohio woman is making headlines after a welfare check carried out by local police found her safe and sound inside her home, partaking in one of her favorite hobbies.

The identity of the 91-year-old woman has not been released, but authorities say she was enrolled in the state’s Are You Okay? Program, a system designed to check in on senior residents via daily calls, WEWS reported.

When the woman failed to answer the calls, her daughter grew concerned and called the local police — what happened next left officers stunned.

Bodycam footage shared with the outlet showed an officer arriving at the woman’s home and entering through her garage on the evening of April 9.

“Vehicle’s in the garage,” the officer said to dispatch, making observations before entering the residence.

“Westlake police,” he yelled, announcing his arrival while walking into the home.

The newscast cut the bodycam footage after his entry to protect her identity, but Vogel proudly said there was no cause for concern.

“[It] turned out to be okay,” Westlake Police Captain Jerry Vogel said. “Everybody got a good laugh out of it.”

Though authorities declined to release additional video from that evening, the department did share dispatch audio of the welfare check.

“We’re here with her now,” the responding officer said. “She’s playing video games in her bedroom.”

The woman did not answer the Are You Okay? calls because she was too focused on trying to beat her own record on the game, but was thankful that the program worked and sent someone to check on her, police said.

PEOPLE reached out to the Westlake Police Department for comment, but did not immediately receive a response.
