The shortlist for the 2026 Women's Prize for Fiction has arrived.
On April 22, the Women's Prize Trust announced the six finalists for the prestigious literary prize, established in 1996 to honor and champion women writers from around the world.
Four debut novelists made up the shortlist, including Addie E. Citchens for Dominion, Virginia Evans for The Correspondent, Marcia Hutchinson for The Mercy Step and Rozie Kelly for Kingfisher. Acclaimed novelists Susan Choi and Lily King were also among the finalists, for their books Flashlight and Heart the Lover, respectively.
“While this year's shortlist spans an incredible breadth of themes, geographies, time periods and literary styles, the six shortlisted novels each interrogate the wealth of roles women play in society, the power they hold and the extent to which they choose, or are able, to wield it,” reads a statement shared with PEOPLE.

This year's finalists were chosen from a longlist of 16 books. Four of the six shortlisted titles were also from independent publishers.
"We are delighted to present a shortlist that doesn't shy away from examining life's challenges, but also brings many moments of joy,” said Julia Gillard, Chair of Judges and former Prime Minister of Australia, in the statement. “As judges, we are first and foremost readers, and these novels intrigued and profoundly moved us. The plot lines kept us turning pages to find out what happens next, the characters found a place in our hearts and the stories stayed with us long after the last sentence.”
The prize winner will be awarded £30,000 and a statuette created and donated by late artist Grizel Niven. Previous winners include authors Zadie Smith, Maggie O'Farrell and Ann Patchett.
“The significance and experience of fiction is highly subjective and personal, but we can share in its undeniable power to hold up a lens to the realities of our world and to connect with ourselves and each other,” said Claire Shanahan, executive director of the Women's Prize Trust.
