America’s astrology is so fitting!

In the United States, summertime is more than a season; it’s a whole mood and aesthetic of its own. This, however, is no coincidence, considering the fact that America is, quite literally, a summer baby.

From road trips in the bright sunshine to long weekends and backyard barbecues with friends and family, we all get hit with the same wave of nostalgia every year around the Fourth of July — which also happens to fall during Cancer season.

This year, Independence Day marks the 250th anniversary of the United States declaring its independence.

Founded in 1776, America, too, has a birth chart of its own, and while many astrologers still debate the nation’s exact time of birth (or which moment officially counts as the beginning), America’s planetary placements are eerily accurate.

Sentimental, rebellious, idealistic and undeniably excessive, the chart of this country carries a unique portrait of value and contradictions it has yet to solve.

Read on for the astrology of the United States of America.

Sun in Cancer: The homeland

America’s Cancer Sun speaks to the country’s intense identification with home and the homeland.

In astrology, Cancer is known for its deeply protective instincts, sentimental nature and emotional attachment to memory. This is reflected in the nation’s founding stories, patriotic rituals and family traditions.

However, Cancer can also be incredibly defensive when what is familiar to them is challenged. This is fitting for the people in America’s ongoing questions around national identity.

Moon in Aquarius: Land of the free

America’s moon in Aquarius is essentially its ruler, given that Cancer is governed by the moon.

This moon, however, mirrors the way the majority of the population is emotionally invested in themes of independence, individuality and the ideals surrounding the reinvention of society.

In astrology, Aquarius is symbolic of rebellion, collective consciousness, revolution and the future, making it an appropriate moon sign for a nation attached to personal freedom, civil rights and the right to resist authority.

Mercury retrograde in Cancer: A narrative that is continously evolving

Born with Mercury retrograde in Cancer, America is constantly having to return to unresolved conversations about its history, identity and promises.

In astrology, Mercury governs communication, language, ideas and public discourse, while Cancer is associated with memory, ancestry and the past. This placement can suggest that the nation’s story will never be entirely settled.

Americans are in a perpetual debate, which is no surprise, as retrogrades are notorious for misunderstandings and communication errors. After all, even the history of Independence Day is layered with revisions!

It’s safe to say the country’s narrative is inherently complex, emotionally charged and constantly changing.

Mars in Gemini: A culture that moves quickly

America’s Mars in Gemini gives the country a combative relationship with language, information and public opinion.

Gemini governs communication, media and ideas, while Mars brings conflict, competition and urgency. Together, this can describe a nation that fights through speeches, headlines, campaign slogans and televised arguments.

This placement can also reflect a culture that moves quickly from one controversy to the next.
