Sleep Experts Say These Sheets Could Be Causing Your Night Sweats — Their Picks Will Actually Keep You Cool

  • Decolure Viscose Sheets, $75 (orig. $105)

As a hot sleeper myself, I’ve spent more nights waking up overheated than sleeping comfortably  — and it’s all due to heat-trapping bedding. The quickest fix isn’t lightweight pajamas, though; it’s investing in cooling sheets.

Sleep experts say synthetic materials like polyester, microfiber, and nylon are the worst for hot sleepers. “[Avoid] even those marked ‘breathable’ without any justification for why they are breathable,” Cathy Rust, a textile expert and founder of Cool Your Sweats, tells PEOPLE. “They just might be made from a thinner yarn that won’t last past a few washes.”

Keep reading to find cooling sheets based on three sleep experts’ recommendations — all of which are available at Amazon’s home department — from $37.

Rust says Tencel sheets (a.k.a. eucalyptus sheets) are “highly breathable and will allow moisture to evaporate quickly.” She suggests a medium or lightweight design, explaining that although they’re often blended with cotton, it’s important to “make sure the Tencel is the majority fibre” for optimal cooling comfort.

This sheet set is made from 100 percent Tencel fibers and includes another buzzword that Dr. Andrea Matsumura, a board-certified physician in internal and sleep medicine, calls a green flag: Lycoell. It’s known for its “excellent moisture management,” she adds.

What to Avoid

  • In addition to purchasing synthetic materials, buying sheets with a high thread count is another area where experts see hot sleepers make mistakes. According to Dr. Matsumura, thread counts above 600 can actually “reduce airflow.”
  • Sleep experts also warn against buying anything with vague terms like “cooling technology” that don’t provide additional details.
  • Don’t overlook your blankets or pillows either. “If you change to better sheets but are still sleeping under a polyester/microfibre blanket or comforter, you may still wake up hot, sweaty, and damp,” Rust explains.

These sheets are made from a lightweight cotton material that won’t trap heat.  Plus, they are Oeko-Tex certified, which meets one of Dr. Matsumura’s requirements. They’re also complete with deep pockets to keep them in place, so you won’t wake up with your sheets off the bed.

Sleep Expert-Recommended Cooling Sheet Fabrics

  • Tencell
  • Lyocell
  • Linen
  • Bamboo
  • Natural or organic materials paired with terms like “moisture-wicking,” “breathable,” and “Oeko-Tex certified” (meaning, the material has been independently tested)

Viscose is a common material derived from bamboo, which sleep experts consider a cooling sheet fabric. It’s not only soft, but helps wick moisture and is cool to the touch — a.k.a. everything hot sleepers need for a cozy night.
