Scary Movie is officially back!
The horror spoof franchise's latest entry debuted on Friday, June 5 to the franchise's largest box office opening ever. The new movie reunited all four of the series' original stars Shawn Wayans, Marlon Wayans, Regina Hall and Anna Faris for the first time since Scary Movie 2 and grossed $55 million at the domestic box office over the weekend. The movie also made $50.5 million in overseas theaters and has already grossed more than $100 million worldwide.
The Wayans brothers — Marlon, 53, Shawn, 55, and Keenen Ivory, 67 — originated the popular horror movie spoof series with 2000's original Scary Movie, a parody of horror movies like Scream. The team was the creative forces behind the series' first two movies and exited the franchise prior to 2003's Scary Movie 3. Marlon announced in 2024 that he and his brothers were returning for the franchise's new movie. In a recent interview with Variety, he claimed that the series "was stripped from us" by producers Harvey Weinstein and Bob Weinstein, who owned the studio Miramax in the early 2000s.
The new Scary Movie, which has been described as a reboot for the franchise, also stars Olivia Rose Keegan, Kim Wayans, Cheri Oteri, Gregg Wayans, Damon Wayans Jr., Heidi Gander, Deon Cole, Kenan Thompson, Chris Elliott and Dave Sheridan.

Scary Movie's release comes during an exciting moment for the horror genre at large. Two of this year's most popular movies, Backrooms and Obsession, continued to stand out at the box office and grossed $25.9 million and $25.6 million over the weekend, respectively. Backrooms, directed by 20-year-old Kane Parsons, is officially A24's highest-grossing release ever after overtaking Timothée Chalamet's December release Marty Supreme.
Meanwhile, Obsession, directed by another 20-something in Curry Barker, has now made more than $200 million around the world and is studio Focus Features' biggest movie of all time. According to The Hollywood Reporter, its $25.6 million gross over the weekend is the best fourth weekend for a horror movie in theaters ever, besting 1999's Blair Witch Project. The outlet reported that Obsession is the first movie since E.T. The Extra Terrestrial to increase the amount of money it made in theaters in its second and third weekends following its release.
