Small upgrades often make an outfit, and celebrities are proving this point with fall’s unexpected “it” accessory — scarves. Pamela Anderson recently fashioned one into a bandana, while Kate Moss and Victoria Justice wrapped theirs around the handles of their handbags for a fresh pop of color. Kendall Jenner gave us even more ideas when she turned a velvet version into a top.
Inspired by these cool celeb looks, I set out to try the trend myself with the help of Nicole Klementowicz, a fashion stylist and the founder of The Refresh Atelier. She taught me four ways to style sleek scarves with Nordstrom picks.

The simplest way to try the trend is to wear a scarf around your neck, says Klementowicz. This 100 percent silk option will feel comfortable against your skin and add a fun touch thanks to its polka dot pattern. The key to making a neck scarf look cool and not stuffy is to make sure the scarf appears “a little undone,” says Klementowicz, which makes an outfit appear effortless and modern. To complete the ensemble, allow the scarf to be the focal point and style it with a simple T-shirt and jeans.

#2 Wear It in Your Hair

Take a page out of Anderson’s book and use a scarf as a hair accessory. This pick can easily be worn two ways: as a bandana or a hair tie. “It’s a vintage look,” says Klementowicz, but it can be modernized with pieces like boat shoes and trousers. For extra pizzazz, opt for a brightly colored bag that complements the scarf.

Channel Moss’ effortlessly cool style by wrapping a skinny scarf like this one around your bag handle. Just be sure to “limit competing textures or prints” to keep it polished, says Klementowicz. Though the supermodel opted for a classic jeans-and-button-down combo, Klementowicz suggests the scarf can also be worn with a matching knit set.

Klementowicz suggests tying a scarf around your belt loop for a “more rugged, utilitarian” vibe. It’s an easy way to give an ensemble more of a cool factor, she says. To nail the look, wear one with moto boots and match a piece of your outfit to the scarf’s color.
