A scary moment at a New York Mets game led to a player being carried off the field on a stretcher.
During the game against the Philadelphia Phillies at Citi Field on Thursday, Sept. 17, first baseman Jared Young was injured after his teammate, pitcher Nolan McLean, stepped on Young’s head and tripped. The incident happened with two outs during the sixth inning, as McLean, 25, chased a ground ball.
McLean remained in the game at the discretion of interim manager Andy Green, The Athletic reported.

Players and staff paused and joined on the field where Young lay for several minutes until he he was taken off the field on a stretcher.
Young, 31, appeared to be alert as he left the field, giving the crowd a “thumbs up” signal.
“Jared Young is being taken to hospital for further examination. He has feeling in his extremities. Additional updates will be provided when possible,” the Mets said in a statement on X in the moments that followed.
“❤️🙏,” the social media account for the Phillies replied.
After the game, Green told reporters that Young was taken to the hospital and his CT scan was “negative,” but he was still experiencing “real concussion symptoms.”
Green said it was a “terrifying moment” because it took Young “a while” to come to, adding that it was a “really scary collision.”

Young was the 15th-round pick by the Chicago Cubs in 2017 after attending Old Dominion. He made his MLB debut in September 2022.
He joined the Mets in December 2024 for a one-year split deal, but remained to replace an injured Brett Baty, per USA Today. Young played on the Mets’ 2026 Opening Day roster.
The Mets lost 3-0 on Thursday.
