NEED TO KNOW

  • Hillcrest Medical Center’s neonatal intensive care team celebrated Route 66’s centennial with a themed photoshoot starring newborns in the “cutest detour” onesies
  • The Tulsa healthcare facility, located along Route 66, began planning the special photoshoot in January
  • “They are keepsakes, they are treasures,” a mother said of the photographs taken by nurses

Babies in a neonatal intensive care unit became unlikely models to celebrate 100 years of one of America's most iconic road.

On Friday, May 29, Hillcrest Medical Center in Oklahoma shared a collection of photos on Instagram from its “cutest detour” photoshoot arranged in celebration of the Route 66 Centennial.

One image showed a set of twins sleeping on a checkered blanket against a background of the famous road at sunset, while another snap showed an infant on the same checkered blanket wearing sunglasses.

“A few more ‘cutest detours’ along the Mother Road! 💚🍼,” the captioned read. “Our Hillcrest Medical Center NICU team celebrated the Route 66 centennial with these special moments, highlighting the smallest travelers in our care.”

“For more than a century, Hillcrest Medical Center has been proud to serve families along Route 66, and it's an honor to help welcome the next generation along the way,” the caption concluded.

Several newborns took part in the photoshoot, with all of them wearing “cutest detour” onesies paired with oversized black bows on their heads.

As Route 66 Centennial celebrations are expected to go on throughout the year, the Hillcrest NICU team began working on their photoshoot back in January, according to a post on Facebook.

The medical center is on the Tulsa stretch of the historic Route 66.

In an interview with local outlet News On 6, the NICU team was seen encouraging the newborns to smile while ensuring each of the babies were posing for the camera during the photoshoot.

“We have NICU nurses that are doing the photos, that way we are able to take care of all of the medical equipment,” a NICU team member told the outlet.

“Some of them can get quite fussy or grumpy,” she said. “We have to take our time and let it be on the babies' time. Having a moment that feels more normal brings joy to everybody.”

A mother told News On 6 that she is “proudly” displaying the photos on her fridge.

“They are keepsakes, they are treasures,” the mom said.
