Kevin Federline has issued a statement following news that his ex-wife, Britney Spears, has entered a rehab facility.
Spears, 44, voluntarily checked herself into a treatment facility, a rep for the pop star confirmed to PEOPLE on Sunday, April 12. Her decision came after she was arrested on March 4 on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol (DUI) in Ventura, Calif. She was released the next day.
On Monday, April 13, Federline's attorney, Mark Vincent Kaplan, issued a statement to TMZ, saying that Federline, 48, "is aware of the reports that she has checked into rehab."
"He is happy that she is getting help and that the decision appears to be one that she made and not one imposed upon her by others if it was," Kaplan said.
"The key is that whatever the recommended treatment plan is that she follows it and completes it," Kaplan told TMZ.
PEOPLE reached out to Kaplan for comment.

In addition to Kaplan's April 13 comments on behalf of Federline, Kaplan issued a statement following Spears' initial arrest.
“Kevin hopes for the best for Britney and if help is necessary, he hopes that she will neither resist it or those who are attempting to work with her,” he told TMZ on March 6. "The concern is whether this is just a one off or a one more."
Federline and Spears met and married in 2004, and filed for divorce in 2006. They share sons Sean Preston, 20, and Jayden James, 19.
After Spears was released from custody on March 5, a rep told PEOPLE in a statement that the "unfortunate incident" was "completely inexcusable."
"Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law, and hopefully this can be the first step in a long-overdue change that needs to occur in Britney's life," Spears' rep continued. "Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time."

Following the arrest, Spears was "very upset and shaken," an insider told PEOPLE. "She's terrified of going to jail. It's taken weeks for her to realize that going to rehab is the best option."
"Her team has pushed for treatment since her arrest," the insider said. "People around her do care a lot and are constantly trying to support her, but it can be difficult. There have been a lot of concerns since the arrest."
Spears was "encouraged" by those close to her to seek treatment, another source told PEOPLE. "She understands the seriousness of her situation and felt this was the best step moving forward."
A source told PEOPLE that the star was feeling "very emotional and regretful" about the situation. "She's also embarrassed because of how it could affect her sons. She loves them very much and never wants them to feel like she's letting them down."
A separate insider added that Sean and Jayden have shown their support. "Her sons were a big part of getting her to rehab. They've been clear with her. They just want her to be healthy," an insider said.
