John Dutton's legacy lingers as Beth and Rip start a new life in Texas in the new Yellowstone spinoff series, Dutton Ranch.
In the new Paramount+ series, Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Rip (Cole Hauser) relocate to Rio Paloma, Texas, where they buy a new ranch and make a home for themselves in a brand new world, but Beth's grief over her father's death — Kevin Costner's Yellowstone character died in the final installment of the hit series following his exit from the series — plagues her.
"I think he lives under her skin," Reilly, 48, tells PEOPLE of Costner's character.
"He's only just passed a year [ago], so I think anyone who's lost a parent, or lost anyone they love so tremendously, it takes a long time to grieve changes. And I think it's very much still in her — that sort of loss and that sadness."

Beth made sure to keep a piece of her father with her — his iconic cowboy hat — and Reilly says, "He does live on with her."
"How fiercely she loved him — that continues to be how she loves Rip," Reilly explains. "And now it's his turn to have his ranch."
In the aftermath of John's death in the premiere episode of Yellowstone's final installment, Hauser, 51, told PEOPLE that Rip would continue to be there "100%" for Beth, "and the family," as they tried to "figure out the best way forward."
"That's what John Dutton would want," Hauser said. "That's what he's been taught throughout his life."

Beth and Rip get a chance in Dutton Ranch to truly start to define their lives together on their own, without the weight of John's dream on their shoulders.
“Beth and Rip were always such warriors, and they’re hoping that they may not have to be warriors. They're always going to protect each other. They were protecting a place and a dream of John Dutton’s for five seasons," Reilly previously told PEOPLE. "Now that cycle, that burden is over. It's dead. And so, who are they together now?”

Having to truly start from scratch in Texas is "like going to the moon for these characters," Hauser, 51, told PEOPLE. “They don't know the land or the people or the environment.”
