Jodie Sweetin is sharing the challenges of acting in a show as "iconic" as Full House.
Speaking on a new episode of Taboo's Comics & Kicks, Sweetin, 44, recalled how many of the cast members struggled with working on projects outside the show — because they were all so closely related to their characters.
"It was a thing that I think we all went through at a certain point, myself included, where it was like you want to be able to do other stuff, but Full House was this such icon, this institution, that it is very hard to ever be anything other than that," Sweetin shared.

The sitcom ran for eight seasons, from Sept. 22, 1987, to May 23, 1995, and followed Danny Tanner (the late Bob Saget), a widowed father raising his three daughters — D.J. (Candace Cameron Bure), Stephanie (Sweetin) and Michelle Tanner (Mary-Kate Olsen and Ashley Olsen) — in San Francisco with plenty of help from his brother-in-law Jesse Katsopolis (John Stamos), his childhood best friend Joey Gladstone (Dave Coulier) and his co-anchor (and later Jesse's wife) Rebecca "Becky" Donaldson (Lori Loughlin).
Following the show, Sweetin struggled with addiction issues before getting sober and working at a treatment facility. She also did stand up comedy. Other cast members filmed movie and tv roles and attempted to stretch themselves outside their Full House roles.
"I know John [Stamos] did a couple movies that were like really dark right after Full House ended and stuff like that," Sweeting shared. "And I get it — you're like, I just want people to see that I can do anything other than this. And you know, I kind of had the same experience like getting into comedy and standup where people were like, 'We've seen your comedy, it's on Full House,' I was like, 'That's not my f—ing comedy.' "

Bure, Sweetin and Andrea Barber, who played D.J.'s best friend Kimmy Gibbler, along with other cast members of the original series, reprised their roles for the revival Fuller House, which ran for five seasons, from February 2016 to June 2020.
As Sweetin explained, the revival show allowed the actors to say farewell to their characters.
"I think with Fuller, we all kind of got to finally come to [terms with] … this is who we are and this is what it is," she said.
