What We Know About “House of the Dragon” Season 4, So Far

House of the Dragon‘s third chapter is officially over — but luckily for fans, it’s not the end of this epic story.

The HBO Game of Thrones prequel was renewed for a fourth and final season in August 2024, according to Variety. Showrunner Ryan Condal has said that the fantasy drama was written with this structure from the beginning and that the best is still yet to come.

“We had a plan from the onset,” he explained in a June 2026 press conference, per UPI. “This is a four-season show. You have to wait two years in between each chapter. But, ultimately, this is one story.”

Condal continued, “To get upset about something midway is like the act in the middle of a play that you don’t like. You don’t like the turn that the story took in the middle. There’s a whole other two acts coming!”

So, when exactly will this final act begin? Here’s what to know about House of the Dragon season 4.

Will there be a House of the Dragon season 4?

Yes, there will be a fourth season of House of the Dragon, and it will conclude the series.

Like Game of Thrones, the HBO show was based on the work of George R.R. Martin. Specifically, his book Fire & Blood, which chronicles the rise and fall of House Targaryen’s centuries-long reign over the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros.

The author has previously stated on his blog that he believed it would take four 10-episode seasons to “do justice” to the Dance of the Dragons storyline from the book, which House of the Dragon depicts.

However, the past two installments have included only eight episodes, a cadence Condal said he anticipated would continue until the series’ conclusion, per Variety.

What will House of the Dragon season 4 be about?

An official synopsis for House of the Dragon‘s fourth season hasn’t been released.

Though the details are sparse, Condal promised that the concluding installment will be “massive.”

“It will be the biggest season we have made, for sure,” the showrunner told Deadline in June 2026.

This is notable considering how he described season 3’s Battle of the Gullet episode as “unlike anything that’s ever been done in television before,” according to Variety.

Who will be in the House of the Dragon season 4 cast?

Though nothing has been confirmed, most of the main cast is expected to return to season 4 of House of the Dragon.

This would potentially include Matt Smith as Daemon, Olivia Cooke as Alicent, Tom Glynn-Carney as Aegon, Ewan Mitchell as Aemond and, of course, Emma D’Arcy as Rhaenyra.

In a June 2026 interview with The National, the series star said that their character’s decisions in the final season may be more active than what’s presented in Fire & Blood, letting “grief [be] a mechanism behind ambition.”

“There’s a nice journey that we see Rhaenyra go on over the course of the three seasons, where in the first two, she is kind of racked by doubt,” D’Arcy explained. “She has a lot of self-doubt about her inheritance, about her claim, about her father’s intentions for her.”

The actor added, “And I think some of that has dropped away, for better or for worse, by season three. There is a self-actualisation part to that, as well as something a little more sinister.”

Some of the House of the Dragon cast — like Harry Collett, who played Jace, and Fabien Frankel, who portrayed Sir Criston Cole — did not survive season 3, and therefore will likely not appear in the final episodes.

When will House of the Dragon season 4 be released?

HBO has not announced a release date for House of the Dragon‘s fourth season. However, there have been roughly two years between seasons since the series premiered in 2022.

Condal previously told Deadline in June 2026 that he was in the middle of writing season 4, with plans to potentially begin production in spring 2027.

“We always have to straddle the British summer, which just means starting filming in the spring then wrapping before it gets dark again,” he said. “And because it takes over a year to prep and then shoot the show, it just sort of slots it into this place where we are in the year.”
