A Kentucky woman is warning others to lock up and clean up after a bear entered her home and found its way into her leftover fried chicken.
According to WDKY, Kendra North said the bear got into her Harlan County, Ky., home in the early hours of Thursday, Aug. 14 and immediately shattered glass and ate the remainder of her KFC order that she had left out. A self-described “heavy sleeper” North told officials she didn’t hear anything at all and slept through the whole ordeal.
“My sister started calling me, like, five in the morning,” recalled North. “I declined her at least twice, and she kept calling.” Eventually North realized something might be wrong and decided to answer the next call.
“I answered the call, and she was like, ‘Bro there’s a bear, and it just walked out of your house, and it came down your steps. It came and looked at me, dead in the eyes, on my side of the yard,’ ” she added.
North believes it was a sizable animal given the damage it left behind. “My table is really thick glass, and it completely shattered it,” she said. Her sister heard the table break and initially thought a car had crashed outside.
According to North, the bear was drawn in by the food she’d left on the table. She and her partner had kept the front door open Wednesday night for air circulation and forgot to close it before going to bed.
“I’m a little sad over my KFC,” North told the outlet.
The sightings didn’t stop there. North said she spotted another bear on her porch two days later while she was cooking sloppy joes.
Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Bear Program Coordinator John Hast said a few simple steps can make a home less appealing to bears.
“If you store pet food or if you feed your dogs outside, just think about that,” he said. “Make sure you’re not leaving any out on the porch, and that’ll keep the bear from just coming right in and getting an easy meal.”
He added that people should consider other food sources if a bear has been spotted nearby. “If you’ve got reports right there close to the house, just think about where your garbage is,” he explained.
For North, the encounter is a lesson she won’t forget, adding, “Definitely don’t leave your leftover KFC on the kitchen table and make sure the door is shut very well.”
