NEED TO KNOW
- Musicians, actors and athletes often appear taller on-screen than they are in real life — after all, camera angles and shoes can change everything!
- At 7-foot-1, Shaquille O’Neal is one of the tallest celebrities around
- Shorter stars like Ariana Grande and Sabrina Carpenter have not only joked about but also sung about their small statures
It's been said that the camera adds 10 lbs., but can it also add inches? Kind of!
Depending on how a camera is angled or whether any tricks or special effects are used, celebrities can appear to be nearly any height on-screen. Unless that star's name is Shaquille O'Neal, of course, because he pretty much always looks like his 7-foot-1 frame.
While not quite as tall as Shaq, several singers and actors have talked about their heights, such as Taylor Swift, who stands 5 feet 10 inches tall, and Nicholas Braun, who measures 6 feet 7 inches (just don't say those numbers out loud).
On the opposite end are celebs known for their short statures, including Ariana Grande, Sabrina Carpenter and Simone Biles. Many of these petite stars use accessories to add inches, like Lady Gaga, who often wears platform stilettos.
This list includes some of the biggest names in acting, music and sports, with a range that's equally as impressive as their performances and achievements. (More than two feet separates the shortest and tallest celebrities.)
From Dwayne Johnson to Kim Kardashian, find out how these stars measure up and what they've said about their heights.

Shaquille O'Neal: 7'1"

The retired NBA star famously stands at a staggering 7-foot-1. O'Neal's famous friends are just as wowed by his height as the average person is, and everyone from Swift to Justin Bieber has looked tiny standing side-by-side with him for photos.
O'Neal, who wears a size 22 shoe, told PEOPLE in November 2023 that there's only one thing that makes him wish he weren't so tall: sports cars.
"They've got these Lamborghinis and Ferraris … [and] I used to have to buy two, shrimp them up, spend a crazy amount of money and take the convertible part off to make myself fit," the father of six said. "But that's the only time I've wished I was smaller, so I can get into some of these expensive sports cars. Other than that, I've never had that thought process."

Nicholas Braun: 6'7''

Credit: Frazer Harrison/Getty
Known for playing Cousin Greg on Succession and both Andy Kaufman and Jim Henson in the 2024 docudrama Saturday Night, Braun stands out on-screen because he is often literally a head and shoulders taller than most other people.
"It's been the biggest impediment to getting roles, I think, my whole life. Because even as a kid when I was younger, like 11, 12 years old, I was very tall, I just kept being very tall," the actor told Business Insider in January 2020. "But everybody's got something that can get in the way. I'm just gonna embrace it from here on out."

Dwayne Johnson: 6'4"

Credit: Amy Sussman/Getty
Johnson answered questions he's frequently asked about his height and weight in a video shared on Instagram in March 2020, which he said with a smile were "so personal, by the way!" Though the wrestler-turned-actor first joked he was 6-foot-2, he got serious and admitted that he was 6-foot-4, "despite some reports saying I was 6'5"."
The Smashing Machine star has used his height advantage for humor elsewhere, too, like trolling his friend and Jumanji costar Kevin Hart, who comes in nearly a foot shorter than Johnson.
Alongside a photo of himself and Hart posted on Instagram from November 2018, Johnson started the caption with, "Taking care of business. Great having my son, I mean one of my best friends @kevinhart4real stop by my set of HOBBS & SHAW (our FAST & FURIOUS spin-off film) to have a big meet up about new opportunities."

Jay-Z: 6'2"

Jay-Z has long been a presence in music and entertainment, releasing his debut album, Reasonable Doubt, in 1996. For the first Forbes 400 Summit in September 2010, the publication gathered the rapper-entrepreneur and billionaire investor Warren Buffett for a conversation about their success and philanthropy.
At the time, Forbes described Jay-Z as "well over 6 feet tall," which is a slight exaggeration, though there's no denying the Brooklyn native is a giant in his respective industries.

While the late Princess Diana and King Charles' younger son is two inches shorter than his 6-foot-3 big brother Prince William, at 6-foot-1, Prince Harry is still "four inches above the average height for a man in the U.K.," per GoodtoKnow.

Michael B. Jordan: 6'0"

According to Business Insider, in February 2018, Sinners star and Oscar-winning actor Michael B. Jordan replied to a user on X (formerly Twitter) who disparaged him for living with his parents, enjoying anime and being 5-foot-9, writing, "First of All I'm 6ft and they live with ME, put some respeck on my name. LOL…aaaand goku & naruto are real ones 🙌🏾 lol."

Bad Bunny: 5'11"

Credit: Brianna Bryson/WireImage
Bad Bunny is no slouch at 5-foot-11, but other people's heights became a point of contention when it came time to participate in his 2026 Apple Music Super Bowl LX Halftime Show.
As the San Francisco Chronicle reported in January 2026, the Super Bowl field team application reportedly required participants to be between 5 feet, 7 inches and 6 feet tall. The outlet noted that the Puerto Rican musician — who made history at the 2026 Grammys — has a fanbase with a high percentage of Latina women, but 5'2" and 5'1.7" are the average heights for Hispanic women in the United States and Mexican American women, respectively, per the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

Nicole Kidman: 5'11"

Credit: Arturo Holmes/Getty
The tallest woman represented on this list, Academy Award-winning actress Nicole Kidman, revealed that she was once told she wouldn't "have a career" because of her height.
The Scarpetta star told Radio Times Podcast in January 2024 that she was ridiculed for being tall, which drove her to lie and say she was 5 feet 10.5 inches tall instead of 5-foot-11.
Kidman admitted that her height does "bother" her at times, saying, "When I'm acting, and I want to be small … [but] there's times when I appreciate it when it's related to what I'm doing [in my work]. I'm like, 'Okay, I can use this now.' "

George Clooney: 5'11"

While promoting his 2023 film The Boys in the Boat — a true story of the American crew team made up of University of Washington students who ultimately compete in the 1936 Berlin Olympics against the Nazi-occupied Germans — actor and director George Clooney said he would not have qualified to row had he been age-appropriate for the movie.
"I'm 5-foot-11, so I would've been hard-pressed to be in it. These guys are giants," Clooney told USA Today in December of that year.
The publication reported that the real rowers from Oxford University, whom he cast as extras, were around 6 feet 8 inches, "so I wouldn't have been physically tall enough."

Pedro Pascal: 5'11"

During WIRED's "Autocomplete Interview" series on YouTube with costar (and IRL friend) Oscar Isaac as part of the press tour for their 2019 film Triple Frontier, one of the "most searched questions" on Pedro Pascal's first board was "How tall is Pedro Pascal?"
"I'm 5'11," the Last of Us star responded with a shrug and laugh. "These are the questions people are asking on Google?"
To which Isaac replied, "Scintillating."

Jonathan Bailey: 5'11"

Credit: Samir Hussein/WireImage
Jonathan Bailey is noticeably tall on-screen as Fiyero Tigelaar in Wicked, something that seems to bother Ethan Slater's Boq Woodsman of Munchkinland. While castmates Grande and Cynthia Erivo are short, their characters wear heeled shoes, which slightly minimizes what would have been quite the height difference with Bailey.
Someone even commented on Threads that "Bailey looks like he's 6'3" when next to those same costars on the red carpet.

Taylor Swift: 5'10"

Credit: Kevin Mazur/Getty
Swift once discussed how being 5-foot-10 affected her when she was younger, telling Girl's Life in 2008, "I didn't like being tall when I would walk up to a group of girls, and they were all a head shorter than me."
The "Opalite" singer's tune changed, however, as she grew up: "When I can put on a pair of four-inch heels and walk into a room and be taller than everybody else, now I look at it as a good thing."

Timothée Chalamet: 5'10"

Credit: Michael Buckner/Penske Media via Getty
To portray Bob Dylan in the 2024 biopic A Complete Unknown, Timothée Chalamet learned to play guitar and harmonica and sang live while filming, emulating the distinctive sound of the celebrated singer-songwriter.
Though he gained 20 lbs. for the role, there was one thing about the "Blowin' in the Wind" singer that Chalamet couldn't match: It'd be pretty hard for the actor to shrink down three inches to Dylan's 5-foot-7 height.

Cher: 5'7"

Credit: Kevin Mazur/Getty
During a CBS This Morning interview, Cher said that there was a difference between her private life and her performance persona.
"I don't like going up to strangers. I don't like going into restaurants … but when I'm working, I'm just another person. I'm this person who gets to be free," the "Believe" singer told co-host Gayle King in December 2018. "Cher, onstage, has no boundaries, and when I go onstage … I have to go from my height to, like, 15 feet tall."

When she won the 2025 Grammy for Album of the Year for Cowboy Carter, Beyoncé brought daughter Blue Ivy onstage with her.
After the ceremony, the superstar singer stopped to chat with Entertainment Tonight's Kevin Frazier, and the two talked about what the experience was like for Queen Bey to share the moment with her eldest child, who had recently turned 13.
Frazier noted how "grown" Blue Ivy looked, to which Beyoncé replied, "Taller than me, I don't like it at all."

Meghan Markle: 5'6"

The Standard reported in December 2018 that Meghan Markle's headshot and résumé from her earlier acting days had resurfaced on Facebook, thanks to the Endorse Management Group. On it, her most recent TV credit was listed as Century City, on which she appeared in 2004. The Duchess of Sussex went on to act in several films and had a recurring role on the first seven seasons of Suits.
In addition to her on-screen and stage work, as well as her having brown hair and eyes, the résumé noted Meghan's height was 5-foot-6.

Emma Stone: 5'6"

During an Elle interview with friend and fellow actress Jennifer Lawrence in August 2018, Emma Stone told Lawrence how she let commentary on what she wears and how she looks roll off her back.
"I struggled a couple of years ago with feeling like how I looked was being scrutinized, and then I realized that anything that really bothers me that people could comment on is something I'm already worried about," the Bugonia star said. "So it's not really something that I'm overthinking right now."

Kendrick Lamar: 5'5"

Credit: Cindy Ord/Getty
When Kendrick Lamar took the field as the headliner for the Super Bowl LIX halftime show in February 2025, the rapper's height was on full display during his 13-minute set. Per Beat, one fan posted on X, "Knowing that Kendrick Lamar is 5'5 makes it so much better. Short kings, it's your time to shine."
Lamar is well aware he's considered short and embraces it, joking in an interview at one point: "[Short guys] have more character, they have more dignity and pride, and they're more talented, and they're more aware and more handsome than anybody else in the world."

Selena Gomez: 5'5"

Credit: Stefanie Keenan/Getty
Though Selena Gomez isn't as tall as her Only Murders in the Building costars Martin Short and Steve Martin, her character Mabel Mora doesn't always come up short.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show's costume designer Dana Covarrubias "adds upward of 5 inches to Mabel's height via her signature lug-sole 'cool boots' (as Oliver called them …)."
"So she's towering over Marty and able to sass him around and tell him the business and also see a little more eye-to-eye with Steve and tell him the business," Covarrubias continued.

Kevin Hart: 5'5"

In an interview with Anderson Cooper for 60 Minutes in April 2024, Hart clarified his actual height after Cooper pointed out that various publications claimed he was anywhere from 5-foot-2 to 5-foot-5.
"GQ finally got it right," the comedian said. "[I'm] 5-foot-5, like with a shoe on, like a sneaker. Now, if I put a boot on, I can get to 5'5" and a half."
Later in the interview, Cooper brought up a story Hart had told as part of his stand-up about his "wife watching tall people porn" and how the height of the man in the video was the biggest problem.
The Fright Night: The Million Dollar Heist star replied, "Yeah. 'Why is he so tall? (laugh) Is that what you want?' That was real, we had a real conversation off of that. Is that what you're lookin' for? If your search starts with tall."

Jennifer Lopez: 5'5"

On an episode of Live with Kelly and Mark in May 2023, Jennifer Lopez and the couple discussed what co-host Kelly Ripa described as "incompatible arm lengths" when holding hands with her husband, Mark Consuelos.
The "Save Me Tonight" singer — who at the time was married to Ben Affleck — said, "He's taller, and his arm's up, and I walk, like, a step behind, just to compensate. Which I'm fine with."

Daniel Radclife: 5'5"

While he stands at 5-foot-5 (though some outlets also report his height at 5-foot-4), Daniel Radcliffe has never cast a spell to make himself taller. During a 2015 interview, Playboy directly noted that the Harry Potter alum was "a small guy," then asked if his size limited his role choices, to which Radcliffe replied: "I don't think so."
"Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise have very different careers, and they're both about the same height as I am," the British actor noted. "I could play a soldier. The minimum height for a marine is five feet, and I'm well above that."
"If you're asking, 'Can you play a really f—ing tall person?' No, obviously not," The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins star said with a laugh. "Can I play a Black guy? For similar reasons, no. I couldn't play something I wouldn't take myself seriously in. I wouldn't be able to take myself seriously as the quarterback in a football movie, which is my one legitimate gripe. I would love to be in a football movie. The only part I would get is the general manager."
In case you're wondering about the other actors Radcliffe mentioned, Cruise is reportedly 5-foot-7, while Hoffman is said to be 5-foot-5.

Sydney Sweeney: 5'3"

When you type Sydney Sweeney's name into Google, the Overview section lists her height as 5-foot-3. In August 2020, the Euphoria star set the record straight, jokingly posting on X that "wiki really got their facts wrong im 5'3 3/4 smh."

Kim Kardashian: 5'2"

Kardashian often wears high heels, which help her look taller than her 5-foot-2 frame. Her eldest daughter, North West, even threw some light shade at her during a 2022 episode of The Kardashians. (To be fair, North has been known to humble her mom on multiple occasions.)
Per ET, Kardashian was at her office for the SKIMS' Icons campaign shoot, which featured Tyra Banks, Heidi Klum, Candice Swanepoel and Alessandra Ambrosio. The supermodels asked the reality star to join them for a few shots, an opportunity Kardashian couldn't turn down. However, North swifly kicked her mom off cloud nine when she asked, as photos were being taken, "Mom, why are you wearing high heels?"
"Because I'm shorter than the other girls," Kardashian replied with a smile.

Ariana Grande: 5'2"

Credit: Kevin Winter/Getty
Grande has owned up to "being on the petite side," stating her height in multiple interviews.
The upcoming Focker-In-Law actress has also made jokes about it. During the promos for her 2016 host and musical guest gig on Saturday Night Live, then-cast member Taran Killam called her "tiny all the time." When she questioned him, they stood up next to each other, and he (very obviously standing on something) towered over her so much that his head was out of frame.
The "Twilight Zone" singer has sung about being short. For a bit during a February 2025 appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Grande belted out lyrics she had never seen from queue cards held by Jimmy Kimmel.
After starting with the line "I am a strong, successful woman who always stands up tall," Grande became audibly shocked when the song took a turn to "even though I am in fact, so very, very small."
The tune went on to reference her size with phrases like "human baby carrot" and "10 of me stacked up equals one of Shaq."

Cynthio Erivo: 5'1"

Credit: Arnold Jerocki/Getty
In December 2024, Grande's Wicked costar Erivo ended her NPR Fresh Air interview with Terry Gross by describing what it's like to be short.
When asked if her height has impacted her life or career, Erivo said she didn't know and that "a lot of people don't realize I am as short as I am until they meet me."
Podiums came up as a common challenge for Erivo and Gross, who is less than 5 feet tall, with the Tony Award winner saying how some days she decides, "I'm just going to swallow my pride and ask them for a little step so I can reach the podium and feel like I'm a normal height and reach this thing so I'm not having to tiptoe ever so slightly or wear, you know, 15-inch heels."

Lady Gaga: 5'1"

Despite Gaga's 2017 documentary being titled Gaga: Five Foot Two — and her previously saying that she was 5-foot-3 and 3/4 (via TikTok) — the consensus is that the "Abracadabra" singer's height is 5-foot-1. She does wear some high-heeled shoes, though.

Sabrina Carpenter: 5'0"

Credit: Kevin Mazur/Getty
"House Tour" singer Carpenter popped up during Abbott Elementary creator and star Quinta Brunson's SNL monologue in May 2025 to help sing a song about being short after first joking about short ribs and short stories. (Brunson revealed that she is 4 feet 11 inches.)
"It's how we like our movies and how we like our margins," they sang alongside SNL cast member Marcello Hernández and former NBA player Dwyane Wade. "We've been the same height since kindergarten. Life is just more fun when you're fun size."

Simone Biles: 4'8"

Credit: VALERIE MACON/AFP via Getty
Biles is well aware she's petite — something that comes into play when she's shopping for pants.
"Before y'all complain that nothing fits y'all, I want y'all to see my struggle …" the Olympic gold medalist captioned a photo of high-rise straight-leg Abercrombie & Fitch pants sized at a 23/000.
"So hard to find bottoms that fit. But when I find them…my heart," she added on Instagram Stories in August 2024.
Her size is far from a new topic of conversation.
In a January 2018 interview with Today, the gymnast admitted she's over getting asked about her height.
"The question I wish people would stop asking me is, 'How tall are you? Are you going to grow?' I'm not going anywhere. I'm 4-foot-8. I'm stuck," Biles said.
