NEED TO KNOW

  • Curtis Brown and his wife Kim’s 2-year-old son Haze drowned in the family’s pool in Clovis, California
  • The couple, also parents to four other children, welcomed Haze after a challenging C-section delivery
  • Police confirmed there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident

Former Brigham Young University football star Curtis Brown and his wife are mourning the loss of their toddler son.

The couple’s 2-year-old son Haze drowned in the family’s swimming pool in Clovis, Calif., on Sunday, July 26, according to the New York Post. A family member noticed that the toddler was unresponsive in the pool and called first responders.

Upon arrival, the first responders attempted CPR, but their efforts were unsuccessful. The toddler was then rushed to a nearby hospital by ambulance, where he was later declared dead.

Local police told the outlet that there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding Haze’s death.

“It’s an extremely unfortunate situation,” Clovis Police Department spokesman Ty Wood told the outlet. “Adults should never let children swim unsupervised and should always learn CPR and keep safety and rescue equipment nearby.”

A representative from the Clovis Police Department did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Curtis, 42, and Kim are also parents to 13-year-old triplets Julie, Cruze and Kash and son Trey, 12. The former athlete was a running back at BYU from 2002 to 2006.

Shortly after welcoming Haze in July 2024, Kim opened up on Instagram about the challenges she faced during childbirth. In the caption for her post, which featured several snaps from her son’s delivery day, Kim explained that her C-section didn’t go “quite as planned” before sharing more about the birth experience.

“Holding our sweet baby for the first time 🥰,” she began. “My c section didn’t quite go as planned this time around. I had a great experience with Trey 10 years ago so I was expecting something similar. Not so much…”

“Long story short, my spinal didn’t really work on my right side. I could still move my leg and felt like I was on FIRE🔥!! Curtis could tell immediately something was way different,” she explained. “They tried giving me some Morphine, Fentanyl, Nitrous Oxide, a local anesthetic but nothing was really helping.”

The doting mom went on to share that the process was “rough,” adding that she had to “power through” as much as possible.

“They wanted to knock me out but I knew he was close to being born and I didn’t want to miss everything 😭 so I tried to power through,” she wrote. “It was rough. But he’s here and healthy! 🥰 So grateful @amandarogers_photo could capture all these first moments for us! #straightfromheaven #hazemitchell #csection #traumatizing.”
