Nearly two months after Utz Quality Foods, LLC issued a voluntary recall of certain limited varieties of its Zapp's and Dirty brand potato chips, the recall has been designated Class 1.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration classified the recall as Class 1 on June 24, meaning that it is "a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death."
The items the FDA has classified as a Class I are: 1.5oz Zapp's Bayou Blackened Ranch Kettle Chips, Plastic Bag; 2.5oz, 8oz, Zapp's Brand Bayou Blackened Ranch Potato Chips, Plastic Bag; 1.5oz, 2oz Dirty Brand Salt and Vinegar Potato Chips, Plastic Bag; 2.0 oz Dirty Maui Onion Chip, Plastic Bag; 1.5oz, 8.0oz, Zapp's Big Cheezy Potato Chips, Plastic Bag; and 2.0 oz Dirty Sour Cream and Onion Potato Chips, Plastic Bag.
The reason for the recall is a "potential presence of salmonella."
The original recall was initiated on April 28 as announced in a press release on May 4. A full list of recalled items can be seen here.
At the time, Utz Quality Foods, LLC explained that the recall was being initiated after receiving notification "that a seasoning containing dry milk powder, sourced from California Dairies, Inc. and supplied by a third-party supplier, may contain the presence of Salmonella."

Salmonella can cause serious, sometimes fatal, infections in young children, elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems, according to the FDA.
The company said it issued the recall "out of an abundance of caution," as the affected seasoning batches tested negative before use.
"To date, there have been no complaints of illness reported to Utz in connection with the recalled products. Utz is recalling these products based on the ingredient supplier's recall," the announcement said.
A spokesperson for Utz Quality Foods LLC previously confirmed in a statement to PEOPLE that "the affected seasoning batches tested negative for Salmonella prior to use."
"However, out of an abundance of caution, we have recalled limited varieties of Zapp's and Dirty brand potato chips," the statement continued. "No other products produced by Utz Quality Foods are affected. We are working in coordination with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on this recall."
