An Alabama man has been arrested following the death of his 1-year-old son.
At around 5:00 p.m. local time on Wednesday, May 20, authorities responded to reports from family members about a child being found dead while still strapped in a car seat at a residence in Brookwood, in Tuscaloosa County, according to ABC News, WBRC and Tuscaloosa News.
"Initial investigation shows that the child was in the vehicle for an extended [amount] of time," Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office Violent Crimes Unit Capt. Jack Kennedy said in a statement, per ABC News.
He added that temperatures were as high as the mid-90s that afternoon.

The child — who is reported to be a boy, according to WRBC — was in "sole care of its father all day," Kennedy said, per ABC.
The father, identified as Logan Keith Chewning, allegedly admitted to drinking alcohol multiple times throughout the day, per authorities, ABC News, WBRC and Tuscaloosa News reported.
Authorities added that Chewning, 30, left his residence at one point to buy more alcohol, per the outlets.
"The father reported that he believed that the child had been sleeping in its crib but must have been left behind in the vehicle," Kennedy said, per ABC News.

According to records from the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office, Chewning has been charged with manslaughter.
He also has recorded charges of Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Possession of Marijuana 2nd. It is currently unclear if these charges are connected to his son's death.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
The Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, the Tuscaloosa County District Attorney's Office and Brookwood Police did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for further comment.
