When Alyssa Lynn Hartrick and her family purchased their home in Ohio a year and a half ago, they were excited to move just outside the city limits onto a small piece of land where they could raise their daughters alongside farm animals, and eventually enjoy the backyard pool.
But it wasn’t until eight months after moving in that Hartrick, 33, and her husband realized just how bad of shape the pool was actually in.
“The previous owners had moved out of the house three to four years earlier, so the house and pool had just sat there untouched all that time,” Hartrick, who owns a salon, tells PEOPLE exclusively. “We pulled the cover off and realized it was green and black, with rips all over the liner.”

At the time, the couple decided to put the pool renovations on hold and focus on updating the inside of the home first.
This summer, however, they finally decided it was time to tackle the neglected backyard centerpiece.
Before beginning renovations, Hartrick says they hired a pool company to inspect the filter, plumbing lines and overall condition of the pool to ensure there were no major underlying issues beyond the damaged liner and contaminated water.

The family ultimately replaced the chlorinator, sand filter and liner, while also hiring water companies to refill the pool.
“We got everything up and running and unfortunately the heater was leaking,” Hartrick says. “So we had to disconnect the heater, and that will have to be a purchase for next summer.”

So far, she says, the backyard transformation has cost the family more than $11,000.
After completing the renovation, Hartrick shared the dramatic before-and-after makeover on TikTok, where the video quickly went viral, amassing more than 1.3 million views and hundreds of comments — many of them suggesting additional upgrades for the backyard space.

“Girl, you brave doing this in Crocs 🤣,” one user commented.
“Safety fence next! 😇,” another wrote.
A third chimed in, “Legit looks like a pool for an apartment complex! Nice job😁”
“People are loving this transformation,” Hartrick says. “They’re finding it very satisfying, but also excited that the entire makeover is shown in one video instead of cut into separate parts.”

Hartrick says she decided to share the renovation online because she personally enjoys watching similar transformation videos herself.
Even after the viral response, the family is still continuing upgrades to the backyard space. Hartrick says they recently installed a pool safety fence after receiving numerous comments asking to see the finished result.
“I plan on getting pool lounging furniture inside the fenced area and a pool heater so we can all enjoy the water a little more,” she says.
