When he and Turlington became empty nesters, Burns told PEOPLE that they were trying to keep themselves busy to cope with their kids being away from home.
"[The goal is to raise] independent kids who are ready to take on the world. Fortunately, our kids are, but you definitely … the house is quieter," said Burns in September 2024.
During an April appearance on Maury Povich's podcast, On Par With Maury Povich, Burns said that he and Turlington aimed to raise their children as normally as possible.

"We made a choice, and I think part of the reason we're still very happily married and our kids are in a great place was we never took them to a movie premiere, we never took them to any entertainment event, ever," said Burns.
