Police did not name the school where the child was last seen in their press release, but it was reportedly New London Middle School, per WLUK and WFRV.
The young boy reportedly wandered about four blocks from home after his dad last checked on him around midnight, per WLUK, and police were alerted that he was missing just before 5 a.m., according to the local news stations.
The 3-year-old was reportedly found in the Wolf River at 7:17 a.m. and transported to ThedaCare-New London facility, where he was later pronounced dead, WFRV reported. It is unknown how long the boy was in the water, WLUK reports.
John Faucher, owner of the local store Johnny's Little Shop of Bait, told WSAW he saw heavy police activity near the river after an Amber Alert was issued.
“We saw drones. We saw lots of county squads, city squads,” Faucher told WSAW. “I think we had a lot of inter agency support from other communities here in town. Being right here, so close to the middle school, there was a lot of that presence right here, right away in the morning. Before it even got light out, there were teams out looking.”
PEOPLE reached out to the New London Police Department for comment, but did not immediately receive a response.
