NEED TO KNOW
- Alexa Walker added a pony wall to her open-concept home to create distinct spaces without losing natural light
- The $2,500 project went viral on TikTok, with over 4.7 million views, and inspired others with similar home layouts
- Walker says the wall added charm and functionality to her home, which has evolved with her growing family
Alexa Walker's life changed when she became a mom of two, and she wanted her home to change with it.
“Our downstairs was a completely open layout, which basically meant it was one giant room," Walker, 35, tells PEOPLE. "Once I had my second child, toys took over every inch of the space."
While she "missed having distinct, separate spaces for cooking and relaxing," she didn't want to install a full wall that would "make the house feel smaller."
So, she settled on adding a pony wall, which would visually separate the living room and dining room without making it feel too closed off.

“The pony wall was the perfect compromise. It separated the spaces without sacrificing the open, natural light and bright feel,” Walker shares.
With a plan in mind, she turned to Pinterest, where she searched for different half-wall styles to decide what would work best for her home. Once she had visuals, she was able to “get my husband on board with the plan.”
The West Sacramento resident then hired a contractor she had used before, Primespec Construction, who has “done amazing work in our home, so I trusted him completely with my vision and knew he could bring it to life.”

The wall project cost about $2,500 and, now that it's been in her home for a few months, Walker says it has become her "absolute favorite part of the home.”
“It added so much character and charm, and it made the entire downstairs feel cozier. I also love that it created a sense of two separate spaces to decorate. I wish I had made this decision sooner,” Walker tells PEOPLE.

She's now set her sights on her backyard as her next project, but in the meantime, she's enjoying her new living space.
“My husband and I bought this home before we were even engaged. Since then, we've gotten engaged, married and brought home two babies here," she shares. "This house has grown with us through every season of our lives, and I can't wait to keep making it a cozy, welcoming home for our family."
