Few TV shows are as synonymous with sun, surf and slow-motion beach runs as Baywatch.

The hit drama aired from 1989 to 2001, following a team of lifeguards stationed along the California coast — and later Hawaii — through 11 seasons packed with daring rescues, larger-than-life villains and plenty of over-the-top story lines. From devastating earthquakes and serial killers to even the occasional mermaid, Baywatch rarely shied away from the unexpected.

At the heart of the series was David Hasselhoff as beloved head lifeguard Mitch Buchannon, a role that cemented his status as a pop culture icon. Castmates Pamela Anderson and Carmen Electra also became household names thanks to their time on the beach, launching successful careers far beyond the series.

More than two decades after its finale, Baywatch remains one of the most-watched TV series in history. The franchise expanded with 1995’s Baywatch Nights and a 2017 feature film, and will return with a Fox reboot series in 2027. While several original cast members are set to appear, Anderson told Deadline in July 2026 that she wasn’t asked to reprise her iconic role as C.J. Parker.

Here’s a look at what the original Baywatch cast has been up to since they first hit the beach in 1989.

David Hasselhoff as Mitch Buchannon

As the protagonist of Baywatch and its subsequent spinoffs, Hasselhoff played Mitch Buchannon, a veteran lifeguard who regularly imparted wisdom to his young colleagues.

Hasselhoff has continued to act since Baywatch concluded, often parodying himself in cameo roles in films like The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (2004), DodgeBall: A True Underdog Story (2004), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017), Our Ladies (2019) and on the CBS series Young Sheldon in 2021. He’s also appeared on stage, starring in a Las Vegas production of The Producers in 2006 and portraying Franklin in the West End production of the musical 9 to 5 from December 2019 to February 2020.

In addition to being the most-watched man on TV, Hasselhoff has also pursued music, releasing 15 studio albums since his musical debut in 1983. He’s been featured in several talent competitions: From 2006 to 2009, he was a judge on America’s Got Talent for the show’s first four seasons, and in 2010, he competed in season 11 of Dancing with the Stars.

Hasselhoff has even made his TV career a family business, starring alongside his two daughters, Taylor Hasselhoff-Fiore and Hayley Hasselhoff, on the short-lived A&E reality series The Hasselhoffs, which was canceled after two seasons.

The actor shares his daughters with ex-wife Pamela Bach, whom he divorced in 2006. He married his wife, Hayley Roberts, in 2018.

Although the TV personality admits Baywatch’s plots weren’t always the most plausible, Hasselhoff said he is proud of what he and his costars accomplished together.

“The show really wasn’t good,” he confessed in the four-part 2024 docuseries After Baywatch: Moment in the Sun. “But we made it good because we had passion.”

Pamela Anderson as C.J. Parker

Anderson memorably slipped into her iconic red bathing suit to play C.J. Parker on Baywatch from 1992 to 1997. Since then, Anderson has been an advocate for PETA, enjoyed a 22-year-long career with Playboy magazine and was inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame in 2006. Her other television and film credits include Home Improvement, V.I.P., Scooby-Doo (2002), Scary Movie 3 (2003), Borat (2006), Alone at Night (2022) and The Last Showgirl, which premiered at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival.

In 2022, Anderson’s relationship with ex-husband Tommy Lee was depicted on Hulu’s Pam & Tommy, an eight-part miniseries made without her involvement or permission. She released her documentary Pamela, a love story (2023) on Netflix to tell her own story in her own words. The actress expanded on her memories of her very public past in her 2023 memoir, Love, Pamela.

Anderson was featured as a contestant on the 10th season of Dancing with the Stars, partnering with Damian Whitewood until they were eliminated after seven weeks. She made several more appearances on the franchise, including in season 15 of the all-star edition in 2012 and season 9 of French Dancing with the Stars (Danse avec les stars). She made her Broadway debut in a 2022 production of Chicago, performing Bob Fosse’s dance moves as Roxie Hart.

Anderson is also involved in political activism, including AIDS awareness, anti-pornography and whale conservation.

She has been married five times, to Lee, Kid Rock, Rick Salomon, Jon Peters and Dan Hayhurst. Anderson and Lee share two sons: Brandon Thomas, born in 1996, and Dylan Jagger, welcomed in 1997.

In After Baywatch, Anderson opened up about the surprising moment she realized she’d become famous. “We went to London to promote Baywatch, and photographers were falling down backward and down the stairs, and I looked behind me and was like, ‘Who are they shooting?’ And it literally dawns on you that it’s you,” she recalled.

Despite her growing popularity, Anderson’s newfound stardom caused troubles in her marriage to then-husband Lee. Baywatch co-creator Michael Berk revealed in After Baywatch that the Mötley Crüe drummer once “trashed” his wife’s trailer because he was so jealous about her doing a scene where she kisses costar David Chokachi.

Anderson revealed to Deadline in July 2026 that she was never approached by the creators of the upcoming Baywatch reboot about reprising her role as C.J. Parker.

“No one’s reached out to me. I don’t know much about it,” she said. “But I wish them well. It was a great job, and I loved going to work every day on the beach.”

Reflecting on the impact the series had on her career, Anderson added, “At the time, it taught me a lot, and it gave me worldwide exposure. Everything I’ve done has led me to here, which is a blessing. But I have no plans of going back to Baywatch.”

Michael Newman as Michael “Newmie” Newman

Michael Newman played Michael “Newmie” Newman, one of the more experienced lifeguards on the Baywatch team. The actor, who shares his name with his onscreen counterpart, was the only real-life lifeguard on the show.

Newman was initially hired as a technical consultant for the show before transitioning to acting. He has also appeared in the films Welcome to Hollywood (1998) and Enemy Action (1999).

After Baywatch, the actor kept a low profile, trading the TV beach for a career in real estate. Following his retirement, he lived in California with his wife, Sarah Newman, and their two children, Chris Newman and Emily Bright.

Newman was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2006. As he recounted to PEOPLE in 2023, the former firefighter said his family was the first to notice signs that something was wrong when his movements became slower than usual. He learned of his illness after his doctor prescribed him medication meant to treat symptoms associated with the neurodegenerative disorder.

“Everything changes,” Newman said of living with the illness. “All those things that you thought you were going to do with your children and grandchildren, pictures we were going to take, all the plans I had… stopped.”

Reflecting on his life since closing the chapter on his Baywatch legacy — which spans 150 episodes — Newman told PEOPLE leading up to After Baywatch’s premiere: “I am cherishing the days that I get to be on this earth with family and friends. I’m taking life seriously. It’s not a run-through.”

“I hope this documentary sheds light on the heroism of the life-guarding profession and builds respect for the worldwide fraternity of men and women who consider it an honor to risk their lives each and every day to save others,” he added. “I also hope that the telling of my personal story brings awareness to the importance of finding a Parkinson’s cure.”

Newman died on Oct. 20, 2024, at the age of 67. Matt Felker, Newman’s close friend and director of After Baywatch, told PEOPLE that he died “from heart complications“ and was “surrounded by his family and friends.”

Alexandra Paul as Stephanie Holden

A few years after launching her modeling career and scoring a leading role in John Carpenter’s Christine (1983), Alexandra Paul starred as lifeguard Stephanie Holden on Baywatch. Since the series wrapped, the actress has appeared in more than 100 movies and TV shows, including 15 Lifetime films.

In addition to being a documentarian, Paul served as executive producer on films like Jam Packed: The Challenge of Human Overpopulation (1997) and The Cost of Cool (2001). According to her website, she received a United Nations honor in 1997 for contributing to overpopulation awareness. Paul acted in Escaping My Stalker (2020) and appeared in Tethered and Another Coffeehouse Chronicles Movie (2022). In 2023, she released the film Baby Steps, a sequel to her 2018 movie Say Yes.

Behind the scenes, the actress said she and her Baywatch costar Jaason Simmons became good friends — so much so that she pretended to be his girlfriend to protect him from being outed as gay by the media.

“He’s one of my closest friends on the show, so it was a secret we kept,” Paul shared in After Baywatch. “It was so dangerous for a man to come out, especially when you’re a handsome leading man, because producers wouldn’t hire you as a hetero guy getting girls, and that was the character he was playing.”

“There are pictures of him and I in the National Enquirer holding hands and kissing because he needed a beard,” she added. “We did a photo shoot of both of us naked that appeared on the cover of a British newspaper. We wanted to make sure he was protected.”

Paul is a certified health coach and political activist whose focus includes animal rights, LGBTQ+ rights and the environment. She has been arrested twice in recent years for actions in defense of animals — once in 2021 for allegedly taking two chickens from a Foster Farms truck and again in March 2026 for allegedly freeing beagles from a large dog breeder.

Carmen Electra as Lani McKenzie

Joining for season 8 of Baywatch, Electra played Lani McKenzie, a lifeguard with dreams of pursuing a dance career. After her time on the beach, she appeared in various films, including Starsky & Hutch (2004), Cheaper by the Dozen 2 (2005), Disaster Movie (2008) and 2-Headed Shark Attack (2012).

In addition to dancing and performing with The Pussycat Dolls, Electra published her book, How to Be Sexy, in 2007. She has also guest judged on So You Think You Can Dance and Britain’s Got Talent. The Baywatch alum has long been regarded as a sex symbol, a reputation she has harnessed to empower herself.

In 1998, Electra married NBA star Dennis Rodman. The two were arrested in November 1999 for a violent domestic dispute, but the charges were eventually dropped. Electra was married to Ink Master host Dave Navarro between 2004 and 2007. She announced her engagement to musician Rob Patterson in 2008, but the couple ended their relationship in 2012.

Electra has continued to act, making one-off appearances on series like Suburgatory, Franklin & Bash, Jane the Virgin and Alone Together. She’s also been known to show up in various parody comedies, including Scary Movie (2000), Epic Movie (2007) and Meet the Spartans (2008). In 2023, Electra reprised her role as Roxanne in the follow-up to 1997’s Good Burger, Good Burger 2.

Decades after saying goodbye to Baywatch, Electra still has memorabilia from her time on the show, including the red swimsuit that made her an icon — even though it didn’t originally belong to her.

“I just took it because at that point we all did our fittings — the new cast,” Electra told PEOPLE at the After Baywatch Los Angeles premiere in August 2024. “We did our fittings, and the suits didn’t come through until the very end, so we were wearing everyone else’s suit that was tagged ‘Everyone’ would fit into. But I had no problem with it. I thought it was kind of cool. ‘Okay, it’s Yasmine [Bleeth]’s suit that’s going to fit.’ ”

Nicole Eggert as Roberta “Summer” Quinn

Nicole Eggert took on the role of newcomer Roberta “Summer” Quinn in seasons 3 and 4 of Baywatch. Since then, she has appeared on such shows as Married… with Children, Boy Meets World, The Outer Limits, Gilmore Girls and Robot Chicken. In 2004, Eggert starred as Ginger on the TBS reality show The Real Gilligan’s Island, and in 2013, she competed and placed second on ABC’s Splash, a celebrity diving show.

Eggert shared on Instagram in 2014 that she had started a new business venture as an ice cream truck owner for her company Scoops. “I always kind of dreamed of having something like this for the birthday parties that I planned for my oldest daughter, and there just never was anything out there like that,” she said on a 2015 Where Are They Now? episode. “All the ice cream truck guys were creepy.”

In 2018, the actress made headlines for alleging that her former Charles in Charge costar Scott Baio had sexually assaulted her, revealing on X that Baio started molesting her at age 14. Later that year, it was announced that Baio — who repeatedly denied the claims — would not be charged based on a surpassed statute of limitations.

In December 2023, Eggert — who has two daughters, Dilyn Elizabeth and Keegan — revealed she had been diagnosed with stage 2 cribriform carcinoma breast cancer. She has since undergone a mastectomy and breast reconstruction and a full hysterectomy.

For Eggert, filming for After Baywatch was a deeply meaningful experience for her growth as a person and as a mother. “Having a young daughter and having this project has been a great motivation for me to not just sit and think about my health and my wellbeing,” she told PEOPLE in August 2024. “It’s giving me purpose. It’s keeping me driven every day. I think the timing of life is always for a reason. It’s been a great distraction, and my daughters kept me on my toes.”

“I quit Baywatch. [But] running away from things does not make them disappear. As a young person, I sort of ran from it,” she later admitted, “but I also don’t have any regrets at the same time. I don’t believe in them.”

Jeremy Jackson as Hobie Buchannon

As one of the longest-tenured actors on Baywatch, Jeremy Jackson — who played Mitch Buchannon’s young son, Hobie — became a teen idol offscreen.

Following Baywatch, Jackson dabbled in music, releasing two albums in the ‘90s; however, he later experienced problems with drug addiction.

In 2015, Jackson participated on the reality television series Celebrity Big Brother, finishing in 15th place. He was removed from the show after only four days for sexually harassing a female housemate, Chloe Goodman, the BBC reported.

After serving four-and-a-half months in prison for an alleged stabbing in 2015, Jackson was focused on his recovery.

Speaking about his condition in June 2024, Jackson told PEOPLE: “I am in remission from the chronic, fatal and progressive disease I was once plagued with? Yes, thank God. Yes, I am.”

In After Baywatch, Jackson admitted to using crystal meth on the set of the show and recalled a particularly uncomfortable interaction he had with costar Hasselhoff mid-use.

“I remember David saying, ‘Are you smoking pot or something?’ And I was [thinking] like, ‘Jesus, they think I’m smoking pot?’ I could never tell them the truth. What would they think?” he said. “When you haven’t slept for five days, and you’ve been smoking crystal meth, having somebody look you in the eyes and say, ‘Dude, are you okay?’ is like the worst thing that can happen.”

That August, Jackson told PEOPLE he was focused on his business, Jeremy Jackson Fitness, which he described at the time as “a website helping people who are struggling with body dysmorphia, anxiety, depression, to help them get inspired and have a plan to attack.”

From 2012 to 2014, Jackson was married to former model Loni Willison.
