NEED TO KNOW

  • Vin Diesel shared a heartfelt tribute to Dolly Parton by singing her iconic song “I Will Always Love You”
  • Fans praised Diesel’s emotional performance, while others questioned if it was real
  • Parton, who originally wrote the song in 1973, died at age 80 after a brief illness

Vin Diesel is paying tribute to the late Dolly Parton.

One day after the country music icon died on Tuesday, Aug. 25, the actor shared a unique tribute for her on social media — and fans were pleasantly surprised.

In the Instagram post, Diesel, 59, shared a black-and-white portrait of Parton — and he paired it with an audio recording of himself singing “I Will Always Love You.” Parton wrote and recorded the hit song in 1973.

At one point in the audio, Diesel seemingly becomes emotional as he sings, “So, goodbye / Please, don’t cry.”

Diesel captioned the post with a prayer hands emoji.

In the comments, one fan wrote, “Didn’t have ‘Crying to Vin Diesel singing’ on my list today but here we are.”

Another fan complimented his singing skills, “Vin, you never cease to amaze me. You are a man of many talents. A once in a generation actor, writer and now singer? Save some talent for the rest of us buddy!”

While some fans loved it, others questioned if the audio was real. “I THOUGHT THIS WAS A JOKE WHEN I SEEN IT ON TWITTER WHAT IS HE DOING 😭😭😭😭😭,” one fan wrote.

Parton’s death was announced by her nephew, Bryan Seaver, on Aug. 25. She was 80 years old.

Later that day, reps for the “Jolene” singer told PEOPLE in a statement that she died after a “brief battle with cancer.” The type of cancer was not disclosed.

Since her death, countless friends, country singers and fans have paid tribute to the icon on social media.

Though Parton originally wrote and recorded “I Will Always Love You,” Whitney Houston recorded a cover for the 1992 film The Bodyguard. In an interview with Larry King on CNN in 2003, Parton recalled the first time she heard Houston’s version.

“One day I was riding along in the car and just turned the radio on, and I heard her start that a cappella, like, ‘If I should stay…’” Parton recalled. “It took me a few seconds. I thought, ‘What is that? That’s so familiar.’ And then when she went into the ‘I will always love you,’ I just about had a heart attack and died.”

“I just about wrecked,” Parton said. “It was a great feeling, though. What a great record she did on it.”
