NEED TO KNOW

  • Tony Romo was placed on leave from CBS Sports after his July arrest for allegedly operating while intoxicated
  • His spokesperson said he accepts responsibility and is working to resolve the matter with authorities and CBS
  • Romo reportedly plans to return to TV as an NFL analyst after addressing the incident and related citations

Tony Romo is reportedly in talks to return to TV following his July arrest.

The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback, 46, was arrested on suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated in Milwaukee on July 23. WISN 12 News and WTMJ reported that he failed to complete standard field sobriety tests.

CBS Sports placed Romo on leave from his role as an NFL analyst “until further notice” on July 31. He is reportedly in talks to return, having now owned up to the incident that led to his arrest.

“Tony accepts full responsibility for his actions and has taken proactive steps to ensure that this isolated civil matter is properly resolved,” a spokesperson said on Aug. 27, per TMZ and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

The spokesperson added, “We are working with local authorities to bring this matter to a close and we are communicating with CBS about next steps.”

The statement comes after Romo received three new citations related to his alleged OWI arrest: first-offense operating while intoxicated, unsafe passing on the right side and possessing open intoxicants in his vehicle, per online court records.

Bodycam footage from Romo’s arrest on July 23 shows him being pulled over while traveling on a high-rise bridge on southbound I-43 in Milwaukee.

He told a deputy that he was in the area for a golf event and was going to meet his grandparents.

When asked to take a field sobriety test, Romo said, “I’m going to call my lawyer … if that’s okay.” The deputy repeatedly asked Romo to step out of his vehicle.

“I’m not allowed to call my lawyer?” Romo responded before eventually stepping out. He was then handcuffed and taken away in the deputy’s police car.

Romo has a court appearance scheduled for Monday, Sept. 21, PEOPLE previously reported.

First-offense OWI is not a criminal charge in Wisconsin, per WISN. A citation typically carries a fine ranging from $150 to $300.

Tony Romo’s representatives and CBS did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
