NEED TO KNOW
- Dark Matter season 2 premiered Friday, Aug. 28, with new episodes streaming weekly on Apple TV through Oct. 30
- The sci-fi series expands beyond Blake Crouch’s novel, exploring the multiverse and challenges faced by the Dessen family
- Season 2 consists of 10 episodes, continuing a three-season arc envisioned by Crouch
Apple TV‘s Dark Matter is venturing into uncharted territory for season 2.
The sci-fi thriller follows Jason Dessen (Joel Edgerton), a physics professor who is abducted into an alternate version of his life and must navigate the multiverse to find his way back to his family.
Season 1 adapted Blake Crouch’s 2016 novel of the same name, and he was happy to end the series with the same ambiguity as the book. So when the streamer renewed Dark Matter for another installment in August 2024, the possibilities for Jason were endless.
“It was one of the biggest challenges I think I’ve ever faced creatively,” Crouch, who serves as the showrunner on the series, told Den of Geek in July 2026. “Where do you go when you’re literally writing about the multiverse where anything can happen?”
Fans will get to see where those limitless possibilities lead when the show returns on Friday, Aug. 28. Here’s everything to know about the release schedule for Dark Matter season 2.

Dark Matter kicks off its second season with one episode on Friday, Aug. 28.
The new installment picks up after Jason reunited with his wife Daniela Dessen (Jennifer Connelly) and their son Charlie Dessen (Oakes Fegley), and they entered the Box together in search of a new reality.
According to the official logline from Apple TV, season 2 finds the Dessens settling into a quiet life — until their seemingly safe world is upended by “unimaginable forces” as Jason becomes increasingly obsessed with the Box and Daniela grows more paranoid.
Elsewhere in the multiverse, Amanda Lucas (Alice Braga) and Ryan Holder (Jimmi Simpson) join forces to find their way home while Leighton Vance (Dayo Okeniyi) continues his quest to create a perfect world and Blair Caplan (Amanda Brugel) tries to stop him.
“I think season 1 in some ways is a very idealistic story,” Crouch told Den of Geek. “But now what? How do you keep your family when all of the idealistic trappings fall away, and you have nothing, and you’re stuck trying to find a world that’s safe enough to settle in?”
How many episodes are in Dark Matter season 2?
Season 2 of Dark Matter will consist of 10 episodes — yet another expansion for an adaptation originally conceived for the big screen.
Crouch told Variety in May 2024 that he envisioned the novel as a feature film and sold the rights to Sony while he was still writing it.
However, after struggling to condense the story into two hours without sacrificing important character moments, the project eventually shifted to television.
“The moment that we were able to move it from being a movie to television, literally that day I just sat down and I sketched out the shape of Season 1,” the author told Collider in June 2024.
And the story has only grown since then. After moving beyond the events of his novel, Crouch told GamesRadar+ in August 2026 that he and the writers have already mapped out “a three-season arc.”
