NEED TO KNOW

  • The Madison has been renewed for season 3, Paramount+ announced on April 14
  • Season 2 of the series has already been filmed, as that was how Kurt Russell was able to star in the series due to scheduling conflicts
  • The renewal comes after the show’s March premiere earned creator Taylor Sheridan his biggest-ever debut

The Madison is here to stay.

On Tuesday, April 14, Paramount+ announced that the Taylor Sheridan series has been renewed for season 3. The show, led by Michelle Pfeiffer and Kurt Russell, premiered on the streamer in March and earned Yellowstone creator Sheridan the biggest TV debut of his career, with more than 8 billion views worldwide in its first 10 days.

Season 2 of the series has already been filmed, which Russell revealed before season 1 premiered. Scheduling conflicts initially made it so that Russell wouldn't be able to star, but he told Entertainment Weekly that Pfeiffer and Sheridan worked together to convince the network to film two seasons back to back, which allowed Russell to film all of his season 1 scenes and then roll right into season 2.

The release date for season 2 has yet to be announced by the streamer.

The series is a "profound love story channeled through a deeply personal family drama about resilience and transformation" and a "heartfelt study of grief and human connection" that also stars Patrick J. Adams, Matthew Fox, Will Arnett, Kevin Zegers, Beau Garrett, Elle Chapman and Ben Schnetzer.

Fox, 59, who played Russell's brother in season 1, will not reprise his role as Paul Clyburn in season 2. He told The Hollywood Reporter that being able to star in a project without signing a years-long commitment is among his "requirements these days."

“I’m at a point in my life where I’d rather pop in and do something interesting, but I don’t want to dedicate six years of my life to something [again, after Lost]."

The Madison is a special project for Sheridan, who will release four other projects this year alone. He made a rare appearance at the New York City premiere, where he spoke before the screening and said, "I can't stand these things, so for me to be at one means I'm really proud of the project, which I am."

The show "demanded a lot of everyone," he said, and the entire team both in front of and behind the camera did a "wonderful job" bringing the story to life.

Sheridan also gave a shoutout to director Christina Voros, who he said "exceeded even my wildest expectations" with her work on the series.

In season 2 of the series, "the level of real danger goes up," Russell told Variety. “Things begin to become dangerous in realistic ways.”

Pfeiffer echoed her costar, as she told the outlet of the next season: "It’s after the initial stage of raw grief passes, and some time has gone by. It’s the messy and profound rebuilding of everything that you knew after everything that you knew has fallen apart and what that looks like.”

Season 1 of The Madison is now streaming on Paramount+
