Vergara has been outspoken about her longtime friendship with O’Neill and her hopes that they will reunite for a Modern Family revival in the future. In 2024, she revealed that they even have an ongoing joke about the timing of their potential return to the characters. "I always joke with him, ‘Ed, don’t die. Because if we do the sequel, it will take some time, and you’re the oldest of us. You can’t be dead!'" Vergara previously told Variety.
She also suggested that the cast do a “TV movie” if the opportunity ever presented itself, telling the outlet that she'd "die to be on that set" and that it would "be so much fun."
In December 2023, Vergara brought the cast back together for the first time since Modern Family’s conclusion in 2020. She was joined by O'Neill, Julie Bowen, Sarah Hyland, Eric Stonestreet, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Ariel Winter, Rico Rodriguez, Nolan Gould and Aubrey Anderson-Emmons, as well as the showrunners Chris Lloyd and Steve Levitan, who Stonestreet joked were the group’s "two dads."
"It was very special," Vergara told PEOPLE at the time, adding that it was "the first time we had all seen each other in almost four years," making it "very exciting for all of us."
"It's amazing, because we're always connected," Vergara added. "Even though we haven't seen each other in so long, it felt like we just left the set in 2020."

The Modern Family cast has continued to reunite in the years since the show wrapped. Speaking with PEOPLE in April, Ferguson teased which fellow series alumni he'd want to join him on stage in a Broadway production. “We have been pitched ideas before,” he said of Stonestreet. “It just never has felt right.”
“I mean, Sarah Hyland's a beast on stage and I would love to be with her on stage too,” he added. “Ty Burrell, I used to see on stage when he was starting off in his career. So yeah, I mean any of them really, but of course I'm going to say Eric.”
Modern Family can be streamed on Peacock and Hulu.
