NEED TO KNOW

  • Isabel Klee has announced the sad news that she will be putting down her beloved dog Simon in the coming days
  • The @SimonSits creator shared the news in a video on her social media on July 22
  • In May, Klee revealed that the dog had been diagnosed with cancer

Isabel Klee has made the heartbreaking decision to put down her beloved, Internet-famous dog Simon, just two months after announcing he had been diagnosed with cancer.

The content creator and bestselling author, who is known for her popular Instagram account @SimonSits, came online on July 22 to share the heartbreaking news.

“I have finally stopped crying long enough to make this video,” she began the video. “Literally all morning, crying so hard I could not speak or breathe.”

Klee then went on to share that she had made the “very difficult decision” to say goodbye to Simon in the next few days.

In May, Klee revealed that Simon had been diagnosed with cancer, after spending a few days in the ICU for seizures. At the time, Klee said that vets had performed an ultrasound on Simon in November, which had shown a mass on his liver. A later ultrasound showed that the mass had continued to grow and that it was, indeed, cancer.

In her July 21 video, Klee previously shared that she had been told Simon’s prognosis for his cancer was 8-10 months.

“What we are also taking into consideration is how the tumor on his liver is affecting his epilepsy,” she said. “In the past week, Simon has declined very rapidly. Despite all of his medications, despite all of the cluster meds we’ve been giving him, he has had many seizures over the past few days. He is so medicated, he can hardly walk.”

Klee added that she felt that waiting any longer would not result in an appropriate quality of life for the pup.

“I think Jacob and I both have been holding on to this hope that he will have a day where he is just like his old self. We keep waiting and waiting and hoping that he’s going to have this day. And it’s just not happening. It’s getting worse and it’s getting worse,” she continued, adding that Simon’s vet had also agreed it was time to put Simon down.

Klee added that her greatest fear was waiting “too long,” which might result in a “traumatic and painful death” for Simon. She shared that, after setting a date, the next remaining days of the beloved dog’s life would be filled with “celebration and all the things that he loves the most.”

She concluded the video, thanking her followers for their support and acknowledging how much the dog meant to so many people.

“I’m so grateful not only to love him and to have been his mom, but that the world got to see how special he was, which means I am not alone in this grief. And there is something very comforting about that,” she adds.

“Simon’s life will have been way too short. But the amount that he has done and accomplished and the number of people that he has impacted… How can I be upset about that? I love you guys. And we will get through all of this together.”

Klee’s memoir Dogs, Boys, and Other Things I’ve Cried About was released on April 28 and focuses on her experience rehabilitating rescue dogs to help them get adopted. It also touches on her life, navigating friendships, boyfriends and more. A description of the book calls Simon Klee’s her “first true love,” after rescuing him from the meat trade.
