‘Today’ anchor Savannah Guthrie’s mother was last seen eight months ago

The sheriff’s department leading the investigation into the disappearance of Today host Savannah Guthrie’s mother Nancy Guthrie announced the discovery of a “new possible ransom note” connected to the case.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department (PCSD) was “recently made aware of a new possible ransom note related to the Nancy Guthrie investigation,” a spokesperson for the department told PEOPLE on Monday, Sept. 28.
“Investigators are also aware of social media comments regarding the note and are looking further into the information to determine its credibility,” PCSD added.
PEOPLE also reached out to the FBI regarding the new potential ransom note.
Several alleged ransom notes have appeared during the investigation. PCSD Sheriff Chris Nanos said in an Aug. 1 video that he hoped releasing two notes on July 31 would have prompted community action and help “break” the case.
“We just saw what was being said, and we felt like we needed to put something out that’s really accurate, and this was the time,” Nanos explained at the time. “Investigators felt like there’s a number of pieces of information in these notes that it just might jog someone to say, ‘I’ve heard that,’ or [recognize] the wording, the style of the writing. It might jog somebody to think about who would’ve written this, how was this done?”
The PCSD has been investigating Nancy’s disappearance since Feb. 1. She was last seen near her home on Jan. 31 after her family dropped her off. Her family reported her missing on Feb. 1 when she didn’t show up for a virtual church service.
“My investigators, we look at it, and clearly there’s things in there that are very concerning to our investigative team. So we hope that by releasing the actual note we’ll get some response from the community,” he continued.

Savannah has made multiple public pleas, both online and on air, to the kidnappers, asking them for answers, in the months following Nancy’s disappearance.
During the Sept. 15 broadcast of the Today show, Savannah, 54, said she wanted to give her mother “a proper goodbye.”
Before that, on Aug. 1, Savannah opened up about the impact that Nancy’s disappearance has had on her family.
“Every day, we wake up and try to be strong and go on — because that’s what our joyful and resilient Mom taught us to do. But make no mistake — our hearts are in ruins,” she wrote on Instagram. “We are begging for help. We are desperate. We need someone to come forward. Someone knows something. Someone suspects something. There is a way out — to tell what you know. You can do so anonymously. The reward is available. There is a way to end this situation and do the right thing.”
